Thankful for Thursday’s Slate
The week got off to an electric start with the NFL’s annual serving of Thanksgiving games, with all three contests this past Thursday each having been decided by a single scoring possession to provide nail-biting football action amidst Turkey Day festivities celebrated across the country.
Buffalo, Dallas, and Minnesota came out on top of their respective NFL Thanksgiving Games to strengthen their positions as top playoff contenders and relative favorites to win Super Bowl LVII. The Bills and the Cowboys both improve to 8-3 for the season. Meanwhile, the first-time NFL Thanksgiving Game hosts the Vikings bounced back from their humiliating blowout the previous week by beating the Patriots to pick up their ninth victory in 11 games.
Close Calls and Downfalls
Out of the 12 games played on Sunday, half of them were decided by six points or less, including two contests that went into overtime.
The Browns staged an upset of the Buccaneers in OT to derail Tampa Bay’s bid for a postseason berth a bit and for Cleveland to stay alive in the playoff race themselves with Deshaun Watson’s season debut for the team looming. The other game that went into the extra period saw the Raiders pull off a road upset of the Seahawks on the strength of 303 yards from scrimmage and two rushing touchdowns out of stud running back Josh Jacobs. With that loss and with the Niners winning their fourth straight, Seattle now finds itself one game behind San Francisco in the division standings.
Perhaps the most intriguing development in Week 11 did not come from one of these two games that went into OT. Rather, the stunning victory by Jacksonville over Baltimore will likely be remembered as one of the more entertaining affairs this regular season. Instead of settling for a tie, Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson rolled the dice and succeeded with a two-point conversion after a TD score to put his team up by one with less than 15 seconds left in the contest. That defeat puts the Ravens back in a virtual tie with the Bengals for first place in the NFC North, with Cincinnati now on a three-game roll to put even more pressure on John Harbaugh’s crew.
The White-Washing of Gang Green
There was even one blowout victory this Thanksgiving weekend that was highly entertaining to watch even though it involved two NFL franchises who were seen as preseason doormats. The Jets continued their manic dream of a campaign for a postseason berth with a dominant 31-10 win over the Bears on the rain-drenched field of The Meadowlands.
Not even the bad weather was able to stop New York’s backup QB Mike White from having a return under center to remember. White completed 22 of 28 passes for 215 passing yards and three passing scores whilst also spreading the love to his teammates by throwing to 10 different receivers. The benching of Zach Wilson in favor of White turned out to be a wise decision for New York head coach Robert Saleh, as the Jets improve to 7-4 in their quest to make the playoffs for the first time since 2010.
