New-Age Football Conquers the Bays
Who would’ve thought that Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady are both just 3-4 approaching the halfway point of the 2022 NFL season? The Green Bay Packers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were simultaneously humiliated on Sunday as the Washington Commanders and the Carolina Panthers, respectively, staged unbelievable upsets with their backup QBs.
The Packers couldn’t stop Washington’s running game, which trampled over Green Bay’s defenses to the tune of 166 rushing yards en route to a 23-21 victory in Landover and with Taylor Heinicke overcoming a slow start under center in place of the injured Carson Wentz.
Meanwhile, The Bucs handed Brady his first sub-.500 record in exactly two decades following the 21-3 rout at the hands of the Carolina Panthers. Like Green Bay, Tampa Bay’s leaky run defense was exploited by Carolina to the tune of 173 rushing yards even with former franchise running back Christian McCaffrey’s departure taken into account and with third-string QB P.J. Walker scoring two passing TDs to Brady’s zero.
It’s time for the Packers and Buccaneers to hit the panic button. It all begins with huge improvements on defense and the two former NFC juggernauts may have to resort to making drastic moves before the trade deadline to turn their respective campaigns around.
CMC’s Bay Area Debut Spoiled by KC
The San Francisco 49ers made the most headlines leading up to Week 7 with the signing of aforementioned Carolina stud running back Christian McCaffrey. The former First-Team All-Pro selection averaged 4.8 yards per carry on eight rushing attempts during his debut start in the Niners’ red and gold uniform despite having just read up San Fran’s playbook on his plane trip to the 49ers’ camp prior to Sunday.
Unfortunately, San Francisco ran into a buzzsaw in the form of a Kansas City Chiefs team seeking redemption from a bitter defeat to the Buffalo Bills in Week 6. Patrick Mahomes lit up the Niners’ defense for 423 passing yards and three TDs as Kansas City cruised to a 44-23 road win over their Super Bowl LIV opponent. The Chiefs keep pace with the Bills for the best record in the NFC, while the 3-4 49ers lost their grip on the top spot in the NFC West standings after the Seattle Seahawks improved to 4-3 with their own upset of the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 7.
New York, New York!
It’s a great time to be a New York (or even New Jersey) football fan, as the Giants and the Jets just keep on winning. The Yankees’ sweep at the hands of the Houston Astros over in the MLB’s postseason is a topic for a separate conversation, though.
The Giants (6-1) extended their win streak to four games after picking up a huge 23-17 road win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, as Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones combined for 217 rushing yards and a rushing TD. Elsewhere, the Jets (5-2) are also on a four-game roll and mustered enough offense to fend off the Broncos in Denver, 16-9. Rookie running back Breece Hall dominated the ground with his 72 rushing yards and a trip to the end zone on just four carries. That victory came at a steep price, though, as Hall may miss the remainder of the season with what many presume is an unfortunate ACL tear by the former two-time All-American out of Iowa State.
The 2022 NFL season has been absurdly strange, to put it kindly. The running game has never been more important in the league, as teams like the G-Men and Gang Green prove that they can still win with relatively subpar QBs at the helm thanks to terrific coaching and improved defenses.
