2022 Open Championship Sleeper Picks

By Carlos Chacon

After a thrilling conclusion to the 2022 Genesis Scottish Open, the second week of the PGA TOUR’s annual trip to Europe promises to deliver even more top-class golfing action at the 2022 Open Championship, otherwise known as the British Open. The St. Andrews Links in Scotland will be the setting of this timeless major tournament for the 30th time in history, and there are plenty of golfers in the middle tier of the field who’ve had previous success on the Old Lady, thus making a number of these competitors as viable sleeper picks to win the Claret Jug.

Nitrobetting is here to give the best tips from the betting greens and fairways. This time, take a closer look at the three best sleeper candidates to keep tabs on at the 2022 Open Championship, as well as their corresponding odds to win the latest installment of the annual major tournament held in the Old Course at St. Andrews.

Tiger Woods

  • 2022 Open Championship Odds: +4,000

Leave it to none other than Tiger Woods to shake up the sleeper candidates at the British Open this year. Whilst the all-time great hasn’t had a decent finish since his return from a year-long injury, Woods did make the cut in the two majors he played in this 2022. Tiger’s gone on record claiming that St. Andrews is his favorite golf course, and him entering The Open with more time to rest (he sat out the US Open) means that he might just win his fourth-career Claret Jug and his third British Open win at the Old Course as well.

Louis Oosthuizen

  • 2022 Open Championship Odds: +4,000

Speaking of former Open champions, South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen is one such golfer, having won it all back in 2010 at St. Andrews and by a whopping seven-stroke lead, which is second only to Woods’ eight-stroke victory at the British Open in 2000. Oosthuizen has split his time between the European Tour, and the LIV Tour of late, but is coming off a solid T8 finish at the BMW International Open in Munich to give him some momentum entering The Open.

Tony Finau

  • 2022 Open Championship Odds: +5,000

32-year-old TOUR veteran Tony Finau has had a top-five finish in each of the four major tournaments, and none better than his solo third-place showing at The Open back in 2019. Perhaps this is the year that the Salt Lake City native finally pops his major cherry, as he’s been on the cusp of winning the British Open on several occasions. Finau has made the cut in each of his last five Open starts and with top-15 finishes in each of the last three, including his aforementioned third-place finish three years ago at Royal Portrush.
