2021 Open Championship Recap

Last year’s Open Championship happened at Royal St. George’s in Sandwich, England. U.S. based Collin Morikawa won his second major championship after shooting a -15. Jordan Spieth finished second after shooting a -14. Louis Oosthuizen and Jon Rahm finished tied for third with a -11.

In fifth was Dylan Frittelli with a -9 and Brooks Koepka and McKenzie Hughes finished tied for sixth with -8 scores. Daniel Berger, Dustin Johnson, Robert MacIntyre, and Scottie Scheffler all finished tied for eighth at -7.

Top Pick to Win the 2022 Open Championship

Jordan Spieth hasn’t had his best swing during major tournaments this year. He missed the cut at The Masters, an odd occurrence since Spieth often plays well at Augusta. Then at the PGA Championship, he finished a tied thirty-fourth. He followed up the thirty-fourth with a tied thirty-seventh at the U.S. Open.

But although Spieth hasn’t played well in major tournaments, he’s great over link courses. At The Open Championship, Jordan has a win and 3 other top 10 finishes. He finished a tied tenth at the Genesis Scottish Open, scoring a couple of eagles and 14 birdies. If not for the 14 bogeys, he may have won. Spieth is a serious contender.

Second Top Pick to Win the 2022 Open Championship

The tied fourteenth at the U.S. Open wasn’t bad. Since then, Xander Schauffele has won two straight, taking the Travelers Championship with a -19 and winning the Scottish Open with a -7. He’s hot for sure and the Scottish Open victory proves he can play over a links course. But Xander has never won a major title. So if he wins this weekend it will be his first.

Also, winning three straight is tough. He’s got a shot and the odds are fair, but there’s a lot against Schauffele to get it done. So second seems more probable than first.

Third Top Pick to Win the 2022 Open Championship

Collin Morikawa’s form this season is off. He’s missed three cuts, which isn’t like him. One of the missed cuts happened at the Genesis Scottish Open last week.

Morikawa won’t head to St. Andrews striking the ball with his best swing. Still, sandwiched between a missed cut at the Scottish Open and the Memorial is a tied fifth at the U.S. Open. The U.S. Open played like a links event. So if Collin practiced some shots at the Scottish Open in anticipation of this, who knows? Maybe, he gets it done at more than fair odds.

Top Underdog Pick to Win the 2022 Barbasol Championship

Tony Finau didn’t play at the Scottish Open. But it appears to be more of a pace yourself move than anything else. Tony finished second at the RBC Canadian Open. He then missed the cut at the U.S. Open before finishing a tied thirteenth at the Travelers.

The Travelers was a couple of weeks ago, which means Finau has taken time to prepare for this. He shouldn’t win, but if you’re looking for an underdog to back that has a real shot, Finau is a decent play.
