2021 PGA Sanderson Farms Championship Recap

Sam Burns shot a -22 to beat Nick Watney and Cameron Young both at -21. Fourth place was a four way shake at -20 among Henrik Norlander, Hayden Buckley, Andrew Landry, and Trey Mullinax. Si Woo Kim, Seth Reeves, and Sahith Theegala finished at -19. J.T. Poston, one of the favorites in this year’s tournament, didn’t make the cut.

Sahith Theegala played great at last year’s Sanderson Farm’s Championship. Sahith is a much different golfer in 2022 than he was in 2021 so he could play even better at this year’s event. At the Fortinet Championship, Theegala started off hot. He shot a 67 first round and a 69-second round.

His third and fourth rounds kept him from challenging for the lead. Theegala finished sixth. Sahith is on the verge of winning a PGA Tournament. The Sanderson Farms should be the tournament he wins.

J.T. Poston played awful golf at the 2021 Sanderson Farms. To be fair, J.T. wasn’t playing well, no matter the course. The week before, Poston had missed the cut at the Fortinet Championship. This year, J.T. skipped the Fortinet.

Poston starts his PGA Season with this tournament. If the way he finished last season is any indication, a fifteenth at the Tour Championship, J.T. should be right there on Sunday.

Denny McCarthy knows the Country Club of Jackson course well. Denny finished six strokes off winner Sam Burns in this last year. The -16 is plenty good enough for us to consider McCarthy a top three pick. At the Fortinet, Denny shot a couple of rounds of 71, a 70, and a 69. All McCarthy requires is more consistency to challenge for the trophy.

Scott Stallings missed the cut at the 2021 Sanderson Farms. But Stallings had played great at the Fortinet Championship. So, maybe, he bounced in this last year. Scott skipped last week’s Fortinet. He finished second at the BMW Championship and then twenty-ninth at the Tour Championship to end the 2021-2022 season.

Stallings knows he could have a massive 2022-2023 PGA Tour Season. We should expect Stallings to make a real run to the Sanderson title. The +3700 odds make the top underdog more than playable.
