Which of the favorites should you bet for the 2022 SEC Conference Championship?
Kentucky is the No. 3 seed but the betting favorite to win the event at +170. The four top regular-season finishers all earned double-byes to the quarterfinals, so UK won’t know its quarterfinal opponent until sometime Thursday. The Cats last won the SEC Tournament in 2018.
UK won 25 regular-season games for the 39th time in program history and the 11th in 13 seasons under John Calipari. The Wildcats are seeking their seventh SEC Tournament championship under Calipari and 32nd overall. The rest of the SEC has won this tournament just 29 times combined. Kentucky is led by likely National Player of the Year Oscar Tshiebwe.
The West Virginia transfer is averaging a team-best 17.3 points and a nation-leading 15.3 rebounds per game. He is looking to become the first Division I player to average at least 15.0 points and at least 15.0 rebounds per game since Drake’s Lewis Lloyd and Alcorn State’s Larry Smith did during the 1979-80 season, and the first major-conference player to average at least 16.0 points and at least 15.0 rebounds for a season since Bill Walton at UCLA in 1972-73. Tshiebwe is also the only major conference player averaging at least 1.5 blocked shots and 1.5 steals per game.
Auburn was the outright regular-season champion for the first time since 1999 and is +250 to win the SEC Tournament for the third time overall and first since 2019. Coach Bruce Pearl’s team is led by freshman forward Jabari Smith, who might be the top pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. He was named SEC Freshman of the Week six times. Transfer center Walker Kessler is one of five finalists for the 2022 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award. He leads the nation and SEC in blocked shots (4.6 bpg).
Auburn and Kentucky met once this season, an 80-71 Tigers home win on Jan. 22. Kentucky’s No. 2 scorer, TyTy Washington, only played eight minutes and scored four points before being helped off the court with a left ankle injury. He’s healthy now.
Which of the favorites should you bet for the 2022 SEC Conference Championship?
Tennessee (+375) and Arkansas (+750) round out the favorites and also have double-byes to the quarterfinals. They closed the regular season against one another with UT winning 78-74 to finish 16-0 at home. The Vols have six wins win over a ranked opponent this season — the most by a Tennessee team in a single season since 2006-07, when the Vols also notched six ranked wins.
Led by JD Notae, the Hogs were 4-1 vs. ranked schools this season. Notae is the only player in the SEC to rank among the league’s top 15 in scoring (2nd at 18.8 ppg), steals (2nd at 2.14), assists (12th at 3.62) and defensive rebounds (15th and 3.93).
Alabama is the defending conference tournament champion but the Tide moderately disappointed this season at 9-9 in SEC play – they are talented enough to make another run and priced +1500 to repeat. By some metrics, Alabama did play the nation’s toughest schedule. UA is tied for fourth nationally in total number of Quad 1 with 7 (only six teams have more) and is the only team in the nation to have not played a Quad 4 opponent. The Tide went 5-4 vs. ranked teams.
Florida (+3300) might need at least two wins in the SEC Tournament to get an NCAA Tournament at-large spot as the Gators are on the wrong side of the bubble. Colin Castleton leads the Gators’ attack, averaging 16.4 points, including 17.9 in conference play, and 9.1 rebounds to go along with 61 blocked shots.
Missouri, South Carolina and Texas A&M have never won an SEC Tournament and that’s not changing this week.
