Auburn In for a Rough Ride

After going on a superb 19-game winning streak, the No. 4 Auburn Tigers stumbled toward the finish line going 5-3 in their last eight regular-season games. Nevertheless, the top seed in the SEC Tournament was still in the bag for Auburn after finishing with a 25-win campaign for the fourth straight season.

Freshman forward Jabari Smith (17.1 PPG) is an NBA star in the making, but the Tigers need more out of Smith’s supporting cast such as double-digit scorers Wendell Green (12.0 PPG) and K.D. Johnson (12.7 PPG). Texas A&M looms as Auburn’s first possible test in the quarterfinal round, and the Aggies are tied with Tennessee having four-game win streaks entering the tournament.

Kentucky Slips in the Semis

Many experts consider the No. 5 Kentucky Wildcats as the real team to beat in the SEC considering their balanced offense boasting four double-digit scorers for the season. There’s also the popular belief that center Oscar Tshiebwe (17.3 PPG, 60.6 FG%) is the real MVP of the conference and not Auburn’s Smith.

Then again, the Wildcats have shown cracks against teams within their own weight class. They went just 2-5 against ranked opponents this season, including defeats to Arkansas, Florida, and Tennessee to have them limp towards a 5-3 record to close out the regular season. And as we’ll see below, there’s one team that’s peaking at the right moment who could rival the early-season success of both Kentucky and Auburn.

Tennessee Blazes Past the Competition

We’ve mentioned the No. 9 Tennessee Volunteers in passing for most of this article, and the third-seeded Vols do deserve all the recognition after making a huge impact at the tail-end of the season. They closed the regular season with the aforementioned four-game win streak and 9-1 over their last 10, which includes victories over the Tigers and Wildcats at that.

Not only that, but the Volunteers was also one of only three teams to beat another powerhouse Wildcat program in No. 2 Arizona right before conference play began. The backcourt tandem of Kennedy Chandler and Santiago Vescovi has combined to score an average of over 26 points per game this season. The two also went 8-of-10 from three-point range in their regular-season finale win over Arkansas giving Tennessee plenty of momentum with a hot deep-scoring duo ready to torch whoever stands between the team and the SEC title.
