The NBA Defensive Player of the Year might not be the most attractive award and the most glamorous to some, but it’s still one of the most intriguing ones to look over throughout the season. What makes it even more interesting is that it’s the toughest to predict since its introduction. It’s not as easy to anticipate which teams headline the league on defense versus offense.
With this in mind, we go over the 2023-24 NBA Defensive Player of the Year odds following the past four different recipients. Nitrobetting lists down the top odds and looks into the candidates for the Defensive Player of the Year award below.

Jaren Jackson Jr. is the man to beat. After claiming the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year, the Grizzlies big man enters the picture as the early favorite to win the award. Despite spending the first month of the 2022-23 calendar on the injured list, the Memphis defense tilted and dropped to the bottom of the league. His return in mid-November prompted a spike in defensive prowess. Jackson transformed the team into one of the best defensive units, finishing the season ranked third in defensive rating. The 23-year-old led the league in blocks by a significant margin, while topping all contenders in defensive rating.
At a close second is Cleveland’s Evan Mobley. The USC product established himself as one of the most promising defenders in the league. He finished third in the NBA Defensive Player of the Year voting last season after averaging 1.5 blocks per game and helping his team reach the best defensive rating record in the league. The only question here lies beneath his ceiling. If he caps as a finalist the past season and is overshadowed by teammate Jarrett Allen, Mobley might find himself in trouble. Nevertheless, we know that the six-foot-eleven power forward/center has the skillset to make it to the top with consistency and playing time under his belt.
2021 NBA Champion Giannis Antetokounmpo always has a solid position in this race. The Greek Freak is one of the most intimidating and versatile defenders in the league today, and the Bucks crew behind him are always a terror to play thanks to his presence on both ends of the court. That said, the 28-year-old doesn’t have to carry such a heavy defensive load thanks to teammates Jrue Holiday and Brook Lopez, and his defensive figures could take a slight hit. His combined 1.6 blocks and steals last season matched his lowest record since his NBA debut.
The former New Orleans Pelicans big man remains a strong contender to win the upcoming season’s Defensive Player of the Year award. Had the Los Angeles Lakers improved on that end of the floor, Davis would have made the top five contenders at the very least. However, the Lakers ranked 11th in defensive rating and 20th in points allowed per game. Unless Davis can forge another monumental statistical season, it can be tough to overlook his team’s shortcomings. More than that, Davis needs to remain healthy to maintain his spot in this award race. His 96 regular-season games over the past two seasons won’t cut it if his injuries persist.
