Top Picks to Win the 2023 NBA Northwest Division
The Denver Nuggets peaked at the right time last season. Despite taking their foot off the gas and taking it easy for the last few weeks of the regular season, they quickly regained their momentum and won the first title in franchise history.
It’s been a quiet offseason for the Denver Nuggets. Most of their activity revolves around the draft. The biggest loss involves key sixth man and core piece Bruce Brown heading out the door. His defense, playmaking, and versatility were pivotal to the Nuggets’ run. There’s no question that he will be missed in the rotation. Beyond that, the roster remains the same, though depth took another hit with the departure of Jeff Green and Vlatko Cancar.
The Nuggets have to build and rely on younger players like Christian Braun, Zeke Nnaji, and Peyton Watson, which could produce a wide range of results. All that said, last season’s starting lineup returns as a pack, and every player on the list is healthy and firing on all cylinders.
Trailing Denver at +700 are the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Wolves were a huge disappointment last year after letting go of solid pieces for Rudy Gobert last summer. Nevertheless, they won 42 games despite not having Karl Anthony-Towns most of the season, primary scorer D’Angelo Russell leaving, and Gobert underperforming. Anthony Edwards can do with more consistent performances, but Mike Conley’s steady hands on both ends of the floor should help the team log better results this coming campaign. Furthermore, adding Troy Brown and Shake Milto to the mix with the Leonard Miller pick provides more depth.
Third on the list is the up-and-coming lineup of Oklahoma City. The +800 favorites had a busy offseason and are waiting patiently in their rebuild process. They take the route of developing players rather than finding a win-now player that could cripple the organization’s finances. Instead, OKC adds more firepower to the core team to help 2022 NBA Draft second pick Chet Holmgren get his debut season up and running.
Thunder superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is also pumped ahead of the season following his positive showing in the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. It wouldn’t be shocking to see the franchise take another step forward with Holmgren linking up with the Canadian guard.
Top Sleeper Picks to Win the 2023 NBA Northwest Division
Holding onto the last two spots on the board are the Utah Jazz and the Portland Trail Blazers. The former continued to turn over veterans for young players and should offer intriguing narratives. It’s tough to see this team good enough on the playmaking front with only Jordan Clarkson and Collin Sexton up there. This squad needs more veteran presence if they want to pierce their way out of the bottom two.
Meanwhile, the +10,000 Blazers with the 2023 NBA Draft third pick Scoot Henderson introduced more punch to the squad. But, Damian Lillard’s trade request keeps their winning chances in doubt. One of the best players in the league right now is still determined to find greener pastures. Jerami Grant’s contract should keep him performing at his best, and it’s nearly impossible to predict how the team will do since many of their veterans could be headed out the door soon.
