2022 3M Open Recap

Tony Finau shot a -17 to comfortably beat Emiliano Grillo and Sungjae Im by 3 strokes. Following Grillo and Im a stroke off at -13 and tied for fourth were James Hahn, Scott Piercy, and Tom Hoge.

Greyson Sigg, Danny Willett, and Callum Tarren tied for seventh at -10. Chasson Hadley was alone in tenth place with a -9. Five players: Kelly Kraft, Peter Malnati, J.T. Poston, Andrew Putnam, and Robert Streb tied for eleventh with -8 scores.

2023 3M Open Top Pick

Justin Thomas is playing the worst golf of his career. In the past six tournaments, Thomas has missed the cut four times. The missed cuts include not playing on Saturday or Sunday at the U.S. Open or The Open Championship.

So if things are going so badly, why is Justin Thomas our top pick? JT scored a tied ninth at The Travelers Championship. After shooting a first round 70, he shot 64-62-67 to finish with a 263-17.

A similar performance will land Justin the 3M trophy. No doubt, JT is hoping this tournament helps him get his form right. At 20-to-1, we have faith.

2023 3M Open Second Pick

In last year’s 3M Open, Sungjae Im finished a fantastic -14, 3 strokes off winner Tony Finau, and in second place. Im, for sure, can put everything together this week for a first place finish. In the last few tournaments, Sungjae has hit the ball well. He missed the cut at the Genesis Scottish Open but bounced back with a fantastic performance at The Open Championship, finishing twentieth.

Im has finished thirtieth or better in three of the last four tournaments. So the form is there. If you don’t agree with our Justin Thomas thesis, backing Sungjae Im makes sense.

2023 3M Open Third Pick

The defending champ had a fantastic 2022, which might explain why he won the 3M Open last year. But so far in 2023, things haven’t gone as smoothly.

Tony Finau’s recent form leaves much to be desired. He’s missed the cut in the last couple of tournaments played, the Rocket Mortgage Classic and The Open Championship.

For sure, Finau can bounce back. But he’s not in his best form and if you’re looking for a top golfer to get it together, JT has the ninth at the Travelers and offers better odds, which is why we pick Tony third.

2023 3M Open Underdog Pick

Like Finau, Sahith Theegala has missed the cut in his last couple of tournaments played. However, before missing the cut at the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open Championship, Sahith had made the cut in 20 straight.

Many excellent golfers will try to use the 3M Open to return to their best form. Theegala is a consistent golfer. So missing a third straight cut likely won’t happen. The 33-to-1 odds makes Sahith a player to consider backing for sure.
