2022 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix F1 Recap

Red Bull dominated the 2022 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Max Verstappen won the pole and the race. Sergio Perez started second and finished third.

Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr., the two Ferrari drivers, started third and fourth. Leclerc overtook Perez to finish second while Sainz Jr. finished in his starting position in fourth place.

Mercedes driver George Russell started sixth and moved up a spot to fifth. Lewis Hamilton, Russell’s teammate, started fifth but dropped back to nineteenth after an electrical issue.

Top Pick to Win the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

It makes no sense to overthink this. Although Max Verstappen won the F1 Drivers Championship weeks ago, he hasn’t let up. Max loves winning races. So it doesn’t matter that Verstappen has dominated from the outset.

He’s not going to let up in the final race of the season. That’s what makes Max one of the most competitive individuals on planet Earth. The man wants to win everything.

Once Max takes the checkered flag in the United Arab Emirates, he will have won 19-of-22 races. No doubt, Verstappen would have won the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix if not for flooding that led to the race’s cancellation.

Second Pick to Win the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

If Max stumbled, a massive if, Charles Leclerc should be there to pick up the pieces. Charles finished second in this last year.

So he knows how to drive over the Abu Dhabi course. Not only that, but Leclerc is also driving well. Charles finished second in Las Vegas. So if Verstappen’s ride for some reason isn’t as amazing as it usually is, Leclerc should be there to pick up the pieces.

Third Pick to Win the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Sergio Perez had a decent finish in last year’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Not only that, but because he’s Max Verstappen’s teammate, Red Bull may want to give Perez a high-five with a checkered palm before heading into the offseason.

Also, there’s a rumor that Lewis Hamilton called Christian Horner earlier this season asking to move his auto racing tack to Red Bull. Horner and Verstappen may want to show the world that Perez is their guy.

Top Underdog Pick to Win the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Mercedes may be through with Lewis Hamilton. If the call to Horner is confirmed, so far Hamilton has denied it, Mercedes will want to move on from their top driver.

George Russell had some success last season. He hasn’t won a race this season, but Mercedes will want to show that Russell is their new number one. That is, they will if they have soured on the relationship with Hamilton.

So if Verstappen doesn’t put forth a top effort, and Max has lost 3 races this season, who knows? Maybe, it’s George Russell who takes the final F1 checkered flag.
