2022 Eclipse winning two-year-old Forte leads a great group of nine three-year-olds into the starting gate at Belmont Park for the final Triple Crown race of the year. Forte, trained by Todd Pletcher, is the morning line favorite. Fellow Pletcher trainee and second choice Tapit Trice is the second choice. 2023 Belmont Stakes Preview
Tapit Shoes is likely to go for the lead. National Treasure will lay a length or less of Tapit Shoes. If jockey John Velasquez aboard National Treasure feels the pace is too slow, Johnny V. will engage early and see how Tapit Shoes responds.
Hit Show, Forte, and Tapit Trice should be in the second flight. Tapit Trice was too far off the pace in the Derby and it cost him.
Angel of Empire, Red Route One, and Arcangelo will be near the end. Red Route One was closer to the pace in the Preakness, but the Steve Asmussen trained runner was the climbing the whole time. So we should expect Red Route Run to close on Saturday, like he usually does.
To Win: Angel of Empire
The Cox trained runner would have won the Derby if not having to go 7-wide around the final turn. Having to go wide cost Angel of Empire, which closed a lot of distance right before the wire and then floated past Derby winner Mage.
No doubt, Angel of Empire is going to be ready to go on Saturday. We should also expect improvement, which will makes Angel the horse to beat.
To Place: Forte
There is a lot to like about the 2022 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile champ. Forte has lost a single race in his career. Todd Pletcher has won four Belmont Stakes and leading up to this, the morning line chalk’s works have been exceptional.
But although Forte has a chance to win on Saturday, he’s tough to endorse. For starters, the Belmont will be Forte’s first race since April 1.
The favorite will have to win a 1 ½ mile race off a 9 ½ weeks layoff. Accomplishing such a feat won’t be easy. Second, Forte may have to run the best he ever has to beat Angel of Empire. That also won’t be easy to accomplish. Second place is the ceiling.
To Show: Hit Show
Hit Show could finish third. Cox’s other entrant was closest to the pace in the Kentucky Derby and ended up finishing fifth.
Hit Show will be closest to National Treasure and Tapit Shoes in this and, again, he will soften enough to prevent a win. However, in the Belmont, Hit Show will have enough in the tank to hit the board.
To Finish Fourth: Tapit Shoes
If the Baffert runner was lone speed like he was at Pimlico in the Preakness, he’d be an easy pick to win it all. But National Treasure won’t be lone speed on Saturday.
Brad Cox trains Tapit Shoes as well as Angel of Empire and Hit Show. Cox will instruct jockey Jose Ortiz to challenge National Treasure for the lead.
Any time in his career when he hasn’t gotten the lead, National Treasure has failed. Tapit sired Tapit Shoes. Tapit has sired four Belmont Stakes winners. So if a front runner hangs on to finish in the top four, it will be Tapit Shoes, not National Treasure.
