2023 Big 12 Championship Odds and Preview

By Jeff Stinger

There’s a big shakeup over in the Big 12 this upcoming college football season, as four new teams join the conference (BYU, Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF). But even with newcomers entering the fray, two teams remain favorites to win the group and neither of them include defending Big 12 champion Kansas State.

Nitrobetting is here to take your bets into the end zone this 2023 NCAA Football season. This time, let’s break down several teams that are seen as favorites, sleepers, and long shots to win the 2023 Big 12 Championship and their corresponding odds of becoming the next conference champion.

Odds to Win the 2023 Big Ten Championship

Favorites

Texas Longhorns

Will Steve Sarkisian finally have Texas live up to its preseason expectations in Sarkisian’s second year at the head of the program? The Longhorns barely cracked the elite ranks of college football season as the No. 25 school in the FBS with an 8-5 record and will be determined to prove their naysayers wrong. Quarterback Quinn Ewers still has a wealth of weapons in former True Freshman All-American wideout Xavier Worthy and stud tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders. The Longhorns also return with six starters from their much-improved defense last season to round out a compelling case as to why they’re currently the odds-on favorite to win the Big 12 in 2023.

Oklahoma Sooners

Oklahoma was in a similar rut as Texas last season, with the team going through growing pains in Brent Venables’ first year as head coach. Still, experts are high on the Sooners’ fantastic job of reloading via the transfer portal this offseason. Veteran offensive standouts in QB Dillon Gabriel along with the backfield tandem of Jovantae Barnes and Gavin Sawchuk make Oklahoma a compelling borderline favorite to reclaim the Big 12 throne for the first time since going on a five-year tear in the conference from 2015 to 2020.

Dark Horses

Oklahoma State Cowboys

Continuing to chug along with passable campaigns is an Oklahoma State program led by 18-year head coach Mike Gundy. The Cowboys have not had a losing season since 2006, but all of their efforts have resulted in nothing more than a consolation of a Bowl game appearance. A rather favorable schedule in 2023 works in favor of OSU, as the team will dodge several of the conference’s top schools along its journey. But with a questionable defense under new defensive coordinator Bryan Nardo and just two returning players from last year’s roster on that side of the ball, Oklahoma State can be seen as no more than a relatively sound sleeper pick to become the next conference champion.

Kansas Jayhawks

Seeing how the Kansas State Wildcats were able to shock the Big 12 with an unlikely title push last season, a door is opened for the likes of the Jayhawks and the aforementioned Cowboys as noteworthy sleeper candidates to win the conference championship. Most of Kansas’ core roster from their respectable 2022 campaign – 17 starters to be exact – are back, particularly standout QB Jalon Daniels. A bad defense that gave up over 35 points per game to their opponents is what caps the Jayhawks’ potential as a real contender in the group, though.

Huge Reach

BYU Cougars

It might take a while before the Cougars make their presence felt as a force in the conference. The former independent program arguably has the toughest schedule among not just the newcomers in the Big 12, but across all teams in the conference in general, with tough matchups against Texas, Oklahoma, TCU, and Texas Tech on tap. Quarterback Kedon Slovis arrives in Provo coming from Pitt but is not a name to write home about, which places BYU as a distant long shot to stun the Big 12 in its maiden campaign in a much tougher group.
