Favorites
Ohio State Buckeyes
Even with the departure of top-flight quarterback C.J. Stroud, this Ohio State program still gets the benefit of the doubt as a co-favorite to win the Big Ten Championship Game for the fifth time in seven years. Head coach Ryan Day can rest with the knowledge that he still has a stud second-generation wide receiver in Marvin Harrison Jr., as well as the stellar backfield tandem of Miyan Williams and TreVeyon Henderson to carry the offense. It also goes without saying that the Buckeyes’ defense is expected to be as impenetrable as it has been year in and year out.
Michigan Wolverines
As the reigning two-time Big Ten champion, Michigan will be ready to counter Ohio State’s ground game with a potent running back duo of their own with 2022 Running Back of the Year Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards. John Harbaugh and the boys from Ann Arbor also have a top-five defense that held their opponents to just 13.4 points per game last season, which is also another huge selling point as to why the Wolverines are rightful co-favorites to pull off a three-peat as conference champs.
Dark Horses
Illinois Fighting Illini
Speaking of elite defenses, Illinois quietly had a dominant defensive performance last season, leading the entire FBS by allowing just 12.3 points per game to their opponents. With a relatively superb 8-5 record, The Fighting Illini had their best season in over a decade and are compelling sleepers to steal the Big Ten crown from Ohio State or Michigan. The defense will be fine, so a lot of their success on offense will hinge on whether or not former Ole Miss QB Luke Altmyer is the right man to take the offense to new heights.
Nebraska Cornhuskers
After a brief and failed coaching stint in the NFL, Matt Rhule returns to his collegiate comfort zone as he takes the reins of a Cornhuskers program looking to return to relevancy in 2023. Rhule retooled Nebraska’s offense through the transfer portal by acquiring promising prospects in QB Jeff Sims (Georgia Tech), TE Arik Gilbert (Georgia), and wide receiver Billy Kemp IV (Virginia). With a revamped offense, a decent defense, and a decorated college football head coach in tow, Nebraska is another intriguing sleeper pick to win their first-ever Big Ten title at the end of this season.
Huge Reach
Michigan State Spartans
With a relatively disappointing 5-7 record in 2022 (3-6 in Big Ten play), Michigan State failed to capitalize on its 11-win campaign the season prior and is back in the doldrums of mediocrity. The Spartans lost their two biggest stars, quarterback Payton Thorne and top wideout Keon Coleman this offseason. This puts third-year QB Noah Kim into a tight spot to try and resurrect MSU’s offense with little to no playing time since he arrived in East Lansing. Throw in a porous defense mired by injuries and off-field issues last season, and the Spartans can be seen as no more than long shots to reclaim the Big Ten throne for the first time since 2015.
