Winner: Kentucky Wildcats
The Big 12 came ready to deliver another Red River Rivalry to remember, and the latest battle between Oklahoma and Texas did not disappoint. The Sooners escaped with a gritty 34-30 road win at the Cotton Bowl, with quarterback Dillon Gabriel having the game of his life. The southpaw from Hawaii accounted for over 398 offensive yards and a pair of touchdowns, including the late go-ahead TD pass with 15 seconds left in the contest. Oklahoma jumps up seven spots in the rankings to crack the top five, while Texas drops six spots as the No. 9 team in Division I to date despite the brutal loss.
Loser: Notre Dame Fighting Irish
In each of Utah’s last three games, one team has managed to score just seven points in each of those matchups. Unfortunately for the Utes, they were on the losing end for a change as Oregon State handed its Pac-12 rival a 21-7 defeat. Utah tumbles down eight spots to No. 18 in the rankings, while the Beavers climb up to No. 15 in the nation. The Utes will get a bit of a reprieve this coming week as they take on the California Bears before back-to-back tough matchups against Top-10 rivals USC and Oregon.
Winner: UCLA Bruins
The Pac-12 continues to surprise, with one school after another pop in and out of the AP Poll from this crowded division. The latest to make their return to the Top 25 are the Bruins, who took down Washington State and ended the Cougars’ bid at an undefeated season. No. 18 UCLA just leapfrogged over No. 19 Wazzou, with the likes of Utah and Oregon State also in the divisional mix within the mid-tier top 25 programs this season thus far. Chip Kelly still has some magic left in his late collegiate coaching stint, as he and his boys from Pasadena could be plucky enough to represent their home field at the Rose Bowl toward come the end of the regular season.
Loser: Miami Hurricanes
A brutal 23-20 loss to unranked Georgia Tech could not have come at a worse time for Miami, which is now in danger of falling out of the top 25 altogether, tumbling down eight spots to round out the rankings. The Hurricanes’ desperation has got to keep them motivated in a crucial Week 7 matchup as (+3.5) road dogs versus No. 12 North Carolina. The ‘Canes have lost four straight meetings against the Heels, but their high-flying offense that’s averaging 39 points per game (15th in the FBS) is still enough of a reason to be optimistic that The U can turn things around before it’s too late.
