Finland vs. Australia
- When: Friday, November 24, 2023. 10:00 am ET
- 2023 Davis Cup Odds: Finland +417 // Australia -667
Underdog Finland has had their detractors since the beginning. However, the Fins have played excellent tennis during the Davis Cup. Most felt the Canadians would beat Finland, but Emil Ruusuvuori and his mates took down Felix Auger-Aliassime and Canada in the quarters. So if Finland could beat the defending champions, why couldn’t they beat Australia.
Canada’s 2023 Davis Cup squad wasn’t nearly as formidable as it has been in the past. So Finland taking down the Canadians makes some sense. However, on Friday, the Finnish play against one of the better Davis Cup teams. Alex de Minaur is one of the world’s top players. Max Purcell and Alexei Popyrin are also very good. Australia can do more than Finland. So the Aussies have the upper hand.
Australia should have no trouble winning 2-of-3 versus Finland. However, it’s impossible to lay – 667 on any squad left in the Davis Cup. The issue is that although Australia beat Czechia, they did so 2-1. So what’s to say Finland doesn’t step it up and Australia has a bad day? It makes sense to roll the dice on the underdog.
2023 Davis Cup Pick: Finland
Italy vs. Serbia
- When: Saturday, November 25. 6:00 am ET
- 2023 Davis Cup Odds: Italy +111 // Serbia -145
Italy has the deeper squad. The Italians boast Jannik Sinner, one of the top five best players in the world. Lorenzo Musetti, Mateo Arnaldo, and Lorenzo Sonego all rank in the top fifty. So although Serbia sends the best player in the world to the court, the Italians can get it done if they cede the match to Djoker and pick up victories in the doubles game and beat Serbia’s other player.
Italy’s strategy is obvious, but that’s just it, right? Novak Djokovic is a for sure victory, which means Serbia can make things very difficult for Italy from the start. If the Serbs manage a win against Sinner, Italy is done. So the Italians must be careful about how they match up players.
On paper, it looks as if Sebia isn’t as deep as Italy, but that’s not true. Serbia is deeper in a way. Most tennis fans don’t know they are because outside of Novak Djokovic, we don’t know many Serbian players. Miomir Kecmanovic, Laszlo Djere, and Dusan Lajovic rank fifty-five or better. All three can play. So if we throw in the fact that Djoker is unbeatable, Serbia doesn’t just become the pick, but the Serbs become an overlay pick.2023 Davis Cup Pick: Serbia
