2022 F1 Italian GP Recap
Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc won the pole. Max Verstappen started second and Carlos Sainz Jr, Leclerc’s teammate, started third.
But although Leclerc and Sainz drove well, finishing second and fourth, there was no denying Verstappen. The Red Bull driver dominated, crossing the finish line ahead of Leclerc by a whopping 2.44 seconds.
Mercedes driver George Russell finished third. Lewis Hamilton finished fifth. Sergio Perez, Max’s teammate, finished sixth.
Top Pick to Win the 2023 Italian Grand Prix
Do we really think Lewis Hamilton wins the Italian Grand Prix? Yes and no. No because Max Verstappen is handling his ride like the greatest Formula 1 driver in history.
Yes, because of two reasons. First, before there was Max Verstappen dominating for Red Bull, there was Lewis Hamilton dominating for Mercedes.
Second, making history in any sport shouldn’t be this easy. It shouldn’t be so easy for Verstappen to win a tenth straight F1 race. So if we combine Hamilton’s past history and the outside chance the Racing Gods decide to deny Max, we come up with Lewis as the top pick.
Second Pick to Win the 2023 Italian Grand Prix
Max Verstappen should win on Sunday, but Hamilton, both Ferrari drivers, Fernando Alonso, Landon Norris, you name it, will be all out to beat Max.
Then again, Max has had the bullseye on his back for the past three seasons and nobody has touched the man. So Verstappen figures to step to the podium for a tenth straight race and go past Vettel./p>
But if you believe the thesis for why we’re backing Hamilton, then this might be the race to go against Verstappen. He didn’t win every race last season, and Lewis might be due.
Third Pick to Win the 2023 Italian Grand Prix
Ferrari has fallen on hard times. It’s difficult to understand how or why, but Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz are having a tougher 2023 than their ultra tough 2022.
Leclerc did nail the pole position at last year’s race, though. So Charles knows how to drive over this track. The key will be how in the early part of the race, where Leclerc must get into a good position.
If things work out, who knows? Charles is maybe one who denies Verstappen’s place in history.
Top Underdog Pick to Win the 2023 Italian Grand Prix
Carlos Alonso finished second in last week’s event. Fernando has top three and top two second place finishes throughout this season. So it doesn’t make sense why he’s at 50-to-1 odds to beat Verstappen. If his odds were lower, he’d be our first or second pick, but at +5000, for sure, Alonso is the top underdog play.
In fact, at the odds, Alonso is an overlay. Sure, Alonso finished near the back in this last season but that was because of a water pressure issue. If Fernando stays on the track, he will push Max. Give Alonso a better than +5000 odds shot to upset Verstappen.
