Yuki Tsunoda

Tsunoda looked on course for another P10 finish after a consistent opening stint. He was hanging onto a few points-paying positions and showcased his spirited defense against Norris and Hamilton in the middle of the race. When the faster cars started to pit around him, AlphaTauri decided to keep the Japanese race car driver on the slick tires. Even if the team was banking on the incoming rain, their forecast was more than ambitious. This eventually led to Tsunoda dropping over a second per lap to the drivers who swapped tires.
The penalty ultimately left him P16 in the classification. However, the silver lining here is the fact that he was in the running for another points finish had they employed a better strategy for him. He built up a strong weekend before Sunday and looks forward to the 23-year-old doing the same in Monza.
Liam Lawson

The AlphaTauri reserve driver’s debut did not score points in his debut. Nevertheless, it was a debut that fared better than many expected. He was “reasonably satisfied” with his performance last weekend. No heroics happened if you spot the entirety of his race, but if you take a closer look at the underlying pace in the actual dry parts of the race, there are positive takeaways for the next race. Lawson kept it neat and tidy throughout an unpredictable race. He picked up broadcast time in the battle with the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc and finished ahead of the other Alphatauri after a hard day’s work.
P13 might not be as impressive to read on paper. But, you have to consider that this is his first full-fledged race in a Formula 1 car. It’s the first time the other AT04 finished higher than that all season, and Lawson was the man behind the wheel when it happened, making him a viable sleeper candidate heading into Italy this weekend.
Logan Sargeant

The American driver’s storyline was going well before he crashed. The look on his face in Zandvoort and the disappointment for hitting the wall was obvious. Nevertheless, it was some of the best driving we’ve seen from the rookie driver. This weekend offers a shot at making a meaningful impact with his FW45. A points weekend is in the works for the 22-year-old driver as he begins to warm up to Formula 1 and improve his results over the last few races.
He started P10 on the grid at the end of an impressive qualifying session. It was his chance to rebound from a late crash, but things took a turn when he darted off the road 16 laps into the race. Sargeant pointed out a faulty power steering, but his pace was more than impressive to bring him up with the upcoming sleeper picks.
