Don’t fall in love with Cinderella
Contrary to popular opinion, Cinderella usually puts on the slipper in the first two rounds. By the Sweet 16, the slipper breaks into sharp shards that cut into your bankroll.
Cinderella almost never makes it to the Elite Eight Ball. She ends up stumbling out of the carriage in the Sweet 16. So just because St. Peters was fantastic last season, it doesn’t mean a St. Peters like team will ride to the Elite Eight in 2023.
Forgive good teams that didn’t win their conference tournament
Houston and Kansas lost their conference tournament. But both have enough talent to win the Final Four.
Not only that, but the Selection Committee made the the Cougars, and the Jayhawks 1-seeds. So if the Selection Committee doesn’t care that those teams lost their conference tournaments, we shouldn’t either.
Know when a team is a false hot squad
The Texas Longhorns won 4 straight games to win the Big 12 Conference Tournament. Because of their efforts, the Longhorns secured the 2-seed in the East Region.
No doubt, Texas is playing great basketball, but are they a hot squad?
Yes, the Longhorns ended their season on a 4-games winning streak. However, 2-of-4 wins came against Kansas, the other came against TCU in the Big 12 Tournament, and the other came against non-NCAA March Madness team Oklahoma State.
Before the 4-game streak, Texas had lost to Baylor and TCU. So, yes, the Horns are playing well. But, no, Texas isn’t hot.
First and second seeds make the Final Four more than many believe
When it comes to choosing your Final Four, lean heavy on 1-seeds and 2-seeds.
5-seed Auburn and 3-Texas Tech made the 2019 Final Four. But in 2021, Houston was a 2, and Baylor and Gonzaga were 1 seeds. UCLA was an 11 in 2021.
In 2022, North Carolina was an 8-seed, but Villanova and Duke were 2 seeds and Kansas was a 1-seed. Not only that, but a 1-seed has won the title since 2017.
So when filling out your bracket, make sure to choose 1 or 2 seeds for at least 3-of-4 Final Four spots.
If you want to bet a big underdog on the money line, do so in the first two rounds
Big underdogs perform best in the first couple of rounds. In most cases, finding the big time underdog might be difficult, but the payout could be worth it.
2-seed Texas has a tough draw against 15-Colgate. 4-Tennessee faces a strong 13-seed UL-Lafayette team.
2-UCLA has some key injuries, which means they’re no lock versus 15-UNC-Asheville. Rick Pitino coaches 13-Iona. So, for sure, the Gaels have a shot to upset 4-Connecticut.
Look for underdogs with a shot in the first round. Then if your dog play comes through, consider riding that same dog in the second round.
Choose at last two 12-seeds to upset 5-seeds straight up
Hoops handicappers and odds makers know that 12-seeds beat 5-seeds. So it makes sense to choose a couple of 12-seeds to upset their 5-seed opponents in the first round.
Be careful, though. Duke, as an example, is a 5-seed this season and the Blue Devils are on a 9-game winning streak. Duke is as hot as can be.
Miami is a 5-seed that could fall. Saint Mary’s and San Diego State are a couple more 5-seeds in this tournament which could fall later this week to their 12-seed opponents. Choose 2-of-4 12 seeds to upset their 5-seed rivals and back those 12-seeds either SU or ATS.
