2022 F1 Mexican GP Recap
Because Qatar hosted the FIFA World Cup in 2022, F1 didn’t run the Qatar Grand Prix, which means the last Qatar Grand Prix happened during the COVID-19 pandemic affected year of 2021.
Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes took the checkered flag that year. 2021 was before Red Bull and Verstappen really got it going. Max, though, did finish second followed by Valtteri Bottas, back then Hamilton’s teammate, in third.
Pierre Gasly finished fourth and Fernando Alonso finished fifth. The sixth through tenth finishers were Lando Norris, Carlos Sainz, Yuki Tsunoda, Esteban Ocon, and Sebastian Vettel.
Top Pick to Win the 2023 Mexican Grand Prix
We’re giving up on going against Max Verstappen to win. Yes, Carlos Sainz snuck in a victory when taking the checkered flag at the Singapore Grand Prix a couple of races ago.
But Verstappen bounced back in Japan by dominating again. The bottom line is that Max and Red Bull are unbeatable unless they beat themselves. Also, the odds don’t make Verstappen an underlay.
Think about it this way, USC’s football team is a -2000 money line favorite to beat the Arizona Wildcats on Saturday. But Verstappen, based on what’s happened this F1 season, has a better chance of winning the Qatar Grand Prix at -400 than the Trojans have of beating the Wildcats.
So we’re betting Max at -400 and expecting to make money.
Second Pick to Win the 2023 Mexican Grand Prix
However, if you believe Max could be due for another letdown, it makes sense to go with the constructor that beat him last time. Ferrari and Carlos Sainz took down Verstappen and Red Bull in Singapore.
Max didn’t even finish second in Singapore. He finished fifth. If Verstappen and his ride aren’t up to the task on Sunday, Sainz could pocket another victory.
It’s more likely, though, that Charles Leclerc gets it done ahead of teammate Sainz. The +2200 choice is due and Ferrari must be sick and tired of carrying Red Bull’s lunch for 2 years running.
So if you don’t believe our Max is a good bet even at -400 thesis, then consider backing Leclerc.
Third Pick to Win the 2023 Mexican Grand Prix
At the +1200 odds, Sergio Perez is worth a look. He, along with Carlos Sainz, is one of two other drivers that have knocked Verstappen from the podium’s top spot.
Perez finished eighth at Singapore. Sergio had to retire at the Japanese Grand Prix. So we don’t know if he would have finished in the top five or not.
Sergio, for sure, can finish in the top five. He’d be our second pick if Leclerc didn’t offer the higher odds.
Top Underdog Pick to Win the 2023 Mexican Grand Prix
80-to-1 on Alonso is crazy. Yes, he didn’t drive all that well in Japan, finishing eighth. But in 2021, Fernando crossed the line fifth in this.
Also, early this season, he finished second in some races. So Alonso, his crew, and his car have had their moments.
Verstappen is so difficult to beat that choosing anybody to take him down is riding with an underdog. In this case, the odds make Alonso a top underdog play. Go for it if you want to take a massive swing.
