2023 Mexican Grand Prix Sleeper Picks

By Hank Blaine

Formula 1 heads south for a pair of races in the fourth-largest continent following a weekend at the Circuit of the Americas. The first two consecutive race weekends feature a race in Sergio Perez’s hometown, Mexico. It’s been a tough few weekends for the 33-year-old as he tries to hold onto second place in the Driver Standings. Checo needs to haul as many points to fend off any rumors of a Red Bull exit with seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton charging from behind.

While the frontrunners fight it out in the last four races of the calendar, Nitrobetting underlines the rest of the grid by identifying this weekend’s top Mexican Grand Prix sleeper picks.

Top Sleeper Picks for the 2023 Mexican Grand Prix

Logan Sargeant

  • 2023 Mexican Grand Prix Odds: +10,000

The Williams wheelman became the first American driver to score points on home soil since Mario Andretti over three decades ago. Logan Sargeant initially finished in P12 but since Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc’s disqualification post-race for technical violation. The event bumped him up to a 10th-place finish on home soil. The rookie bounced back from a testing Sprint race on Saturday where he finished behind the pack. It was also a better race weekend for the Williams driver versus his previous performance in Qatar, in which he retired on the 41st lap due to dehydration caused by the intense conditions. The 22-year-old now has a bit of pace behind him and confidence ahead of the Mexican GP.

As of this writing, the Florida-born driver ranks last in the 2023 Driver Standings with a point in 18 races entered. He also holds a best start of P10 and a best race result of P10.

Nico Hulkenberg

  • 2023 Mexican Grand Prix Odds: +10,000

Haas gives their drivers new race suits for the team’s home race in Austin. But, the new additions go beyond looks. The team has something more substantial to add when it comes to car upgrades. The VF-23 gets a new aerodynamic package that has been under development during the season. It’s patterned after a similar concept to Red Bull’s aero bits that many teams now follow. This could be crucial for Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen over the weekend.

Hulk needs a step forward in performance this season. But, his experience and qualifying results make him a decent sleeper pick this time. Despite finishing out of the points for most of the season, the 36-year-old delivered an incredible P7 finish in Australia. We know he has enough talent to find a points finish, but a first GP win for Hulkenberg in his team’s home race would be historic.

So far, the former Renault driver scored six points in 17 race starts this season, including seven Q3 appearances and a P5 best start which is good for 15th in the Drivers’ Championship standings.

Lance Stroll

  • >2023 Mexican Grand Prixx Odds: +10,000

Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll clinched a better finish this time around. After missing out on a points finish in Qatar, the Canadian driver grabbed seventh place in the United States Grand Prix last weekend. It was a much-needed result for him since losing morale in the last few race weekends. It was also one of the first few times we saw Stroll outscore teammate Fernando Alonso this season. In 17 race starts this season, Stroll faced difficulty a few times with three DNFs. Nevertheless, he scored nine times and a best finish of fourth place. Lance can still snatch 10th place in the Driver Standings if he delivers more points finishes soon. Pierre Gasly is only three points ahead of him, and this could be the photo finish we are looking for.
