How does the All-Star Draft work?

LeBron James (Team LeBron) will pick first after James finished with the most votes during the All-Star voting process. James and Giannis Antetokounmpo (Team Giannis) will alternate picks to make up their respective rosters, beginning with the pool of 14 players from the reserves, followed by the eight starters. Conference affiliation will not factor into the draft, so Team LeBron from the Western Conference will be able to draft players from the Eastern Conference, and the East’s Team Giannis will be able to draft players from the West as well.

Are there new rules to the All-Star Game itself other than the draft?

Yes, the 2023 NBA All-Star Game will also feature a new scoring format by introducing a “Final Target Score” system.

Team LeBron and Team Giannis will initially play three quarters of 12 minutes in length apiece, with each quarter beginning with a score of 0-0. For the fourth and final quarter, the game clock will be turned off and a Final Target Score will be set.

The Final Target Score for each team is determined by the total number of points scored from the first three quarters by the leading team, plus 24 points. That 24-point Final Target Score is in commemoration of the late Kobe Bryant, who is arguably the most celebrated NBA player in the All-Star Game.

For example: if Team LeBron scored 100 points through the first three quarters and is in the lead, their Final Target Score is 124 points to win the All-Star Game. Meanwhile, if Team Giannis is behind with 95 points from the first three quarters, they would need to score 29 points to reach the 124 Final Target Score and take the victory.

Since there is no game clock in the fourth quarter, the game will be decided by a made basket or made free throw.
