In recent times, the race for the National Football Conference title is up in the air, as there have been four different teams that have represented the NFC in the Super Bowl in as many years. The top two favorites this offseason thus far are the Philadelphia Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers, who recently met in the 2022 NFC title game to gain the upper hand from the rest of the conference odds-wise.

Favorites

Philadelphia Eagles

The future arrived early in Philly, as 24-year-old quarterback Jalen Hurts had a remarkable third season as a pro en route to the Eagles’ return to the Super Bowl. Hurts was complemented by elite wideouts in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith for a potent passing game that’s sneakily a run-first offense to baffle opposing teams to a tee. Philadelphia lost a lot of key players on defense during the offseason, but the team did pick up two standout Georgia players in the first round of the Draft (defensive tackle Jalen Carter and linebacker Nolan Smith) to retool its D and solidify its claim as the odds-on favorite to make back-to-back trips to the Super Bowl.

San Francisco 49ers

Had it not been for a couple of unfortunate injuries at QB during last season’s NFC Championship game against the Eagles, the 49ers could easily be the front-runner to win Super Bowl LVIII. But alas, the Niners would have to pick up the pieces once more as they aim for their fourth NFC title game appearance in five seasons. San Francisco needs to address its QB situation between young guns Trey Lance and Brock Purdy. However, having arguably the best defense in the league and All-Pro talent across the board on offense makes the Niners virtual co-favorites to win their first NFC title game since 2019.

Dark Horses

New Orleans Saints

With the Buccaneers’ Tom Brady officially retiring (again), and with the Falcons and Panthers still rebuilding, now’s an opportune time for the Saints to make another run not just at the NFC South title, but the NFC championship itself and beyond. Acquiring veteran QB Derek Carr should be an overall positive for a New Orleans offense that was stagnant in 2022, and most of the team’s defensive stars are still in the Big Easy. That being said, the Saints make for a compelling sleeper pick to win the franchise’s first NFC title since their magical Super Bowl-winning run in 2009.

Chicago Bears

Another division entering unfamiliar territory this season is the NFC North, which was hugely impacted by the departure of Aaron Rodgers from Green Bay. In turn, Packers, Vikings, and Bears currently share the same sleeper odds to win the 2023 NFC Championship Game. Chicago, in particular, is in line for a breakout campaign thanks to a relatively strong sophomore showing from dual-threat QB Justin Fields. A superb haul of 10 picks at this year’s draft also inspires more confidence that the Bears can go as far as a surprising Super Bowl run.

Arizona Cardinals

The honeymoon period under the Kliff Kingsbury era in Glendale came and went by in a hurry, as the Cardinals are now in virtual rebuilding mode under the new regime. The Cards took a page off of the Eagles’ playbook by hiring offensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon as their head coach to try and salvage the slowly-dwindling career of former first-overall pick Kyler Murray. Arizona also has to contend with the rest of the crowded NFC West scene, which would explain why the team has the longest odds to win the NFC title this season, let alone win its division.
