Pass-rushers have dominated the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year Award of late, and there have been three different pass-rushers who’ve won the award since the turn of the decade. The current odds would indicate that there could very well be a new name thrown into the DPOY mix this upcoming season, but which players are grabbing the most attention for this accolade?
Nitrobetting is here to take your bets into the end zone this 2023 NFL season. This time, let’s break down several players that are seen as favorites, sleepers, and longshots to win the 2023 NFL Defensive Player of the Year and their corresponding odds of winning the coveted award.

Myles Garrett
Ever since being drafted by the Browns with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Myles Garrett has slowly proven his worth as the head of his draft class by improving year-on-year for the past six seasons. Garrett finished the previous season tied for the league lead in sacks with 16, and this was also the second straight season that the four-time Pro Bowl selection reached the 16-sack total. Should Garrett surpass his current sack records and takes Cleveland back to the postseason thanks to his presence in the front seven, he’ll likely be taking home the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year trophy.
Micah Parsons
Over in Dallas, meanwhile, 24-year-old edge linebacker Micah Parsons is wasting no time turning himself into an all-time great. The 24-year-old Penn State product took home the 2021 Defensive Player of the Year Award and was named a First-Team All-Pro in his first two years in the NFL. Parsons finished with 13 sacks in back-to-back seasons, as well as three forced fumbles and fumble recoveries in his arguably better sophomore campaign with the Cowboys. These milestones have vaulted him as a co-favorite with Garrett to win the 2023 DPOY award as another elite pass-rusher that can single-handedly take over a game.
2023 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Dark Horses
Patrick Surtain II/h4>
In terms of defensive backs, the Jets’ rookie cornerback sensation Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner gets the most attention as the Defensive Player of the Year candidate with the best odds amongst his peers at +1,200. However, we shouldn’t overlook the ninth-overall pick from the 2021 NFL Draft who’s coming off a breakout sophomore campaign, either. Last season, Patrick Surtain II finished with 60 tackles, 10 passes defended, and two interceptions. Surtain all 17 games in 2022 and allowed merely 417 receiving yards against opposing receivers, making him one of the best shut-down corners in the game and a strong sleeper candidate to win the 2023 DPOY award.
Joey Bosa
There’s been a lot of brotherly love in the DPOY race lately, as the Watt brothers (J.J. and T.J.) have both won the award. Furthermore, one-half of the Bosa bros, Niners DE Nick Bosa – a +1,025 favorite to repeat as a DPOY – just took home the award last year. Could this be older brother Joey’s turn under the spotlight? Joey Bosa’s had an up-and-down career thus far as the lynchpin of the Chargers’ defense, recently playing just five games in 2022 due to a serious groin injury. Bosa’s shown flashes of brilliance, finishing with double-digit sack totals in each of the odd-numbered years since 2017. That makes his 2023 campaign very intriguing to follow, as he’s a tempting sleeper candidate to finally join little brother Nick in the NFL’s record books.
2023 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Huge Reach
Marshon Lattimore
After his fantastic debut in 2017 and winning the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award, Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore has steadily produced well in the years that followed until a lacerated kidney kept him off the field for much of the last season. The four-time Pro Bowl selection has been overshadowed by up-and-coming corners since, like the aforementioned Surtain and Gardner. As such, Lattimore is seen as no more than a longshot to bounce back and resurrect a once-feared New Orleans defense, let alone capture the 2023 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award amidst the rest of the top-heavy competition.
