2023 NFL Week 6 Biggest Takeaways

By Jeff Stinger

Despite the large amount of relatively low-scoring efforts on Sunday, Week 6 still delivered arguably the most pivotal and unlikely outcomes of the season thus far. From a couple of massive upsets to superb individual performances, this past weekend was never short of drama and surprises.

Nitrobetting is here to take your bets into the end zone this 2023 NFL season. Let’s briefly recap the biggest headlines and takeaways from the Week 6 action on the gridiron, and what we should expect from the upcoming thrills of Week 7.

Top 5 Takeaways from Week 6 of the 2023 NFL Season

Turning Gold Into Brown Matter

A gloomy afternoon in Cleveland served as a foreboding omen for the visiting 49ers, who saw their five-game undefeated streak come to an end in a 19-17 loss to the Browns. Rookie kicker Jake Moody missed what would have been a game-winning field goal as time expired, as the Browns escaped with a shocking upset thanks to a fantastic defensive effort.

Cleveland held San Francisco to just 215 yards of offense and also picked off quarterback Brock Purdy, with that blunder being Purdy’s first turnover of the season. Even worse news for the Niners is that the league’s top running back Christian McCaffrey had to exit the contest with an oblique injury, and All-Pro wideout Deebo Samuel also got hurt. The 49ers won’t play until next Monday night in Minnesota, so they’ll have more time to get healthy for their Week 7 bounce-back attempt.

Everybody Hurts

Cue R.E.M.’s classic 90’s track, as the Eagles also came up short of staying undefeated after getting stunned in the Meadowlands against the Jets. Like San Francisco, Philadelphia ended its bid at an undefeated season after New York hung on to an unlikely 20-14 victory in front of a frenzied MetLife crowd.

Despite outgaining the Jets in total yardage, 348-244, the Eagles fell victim to an opportunitic Gang Green defense that forced four Philly turnovers; three of them being interceptions courtesy of Jalen Hurts. Despite this crushing defeat, though, Philadelphia is an early (-2.5) favorite to win on its home turf in Week 7 in a blockbuster showdown against the visiting Dolphins.

Lions and Dolphins Impress

Speaking of the Dolphins, they’re now tied with the Eagles and Niners for the best record in the NFL at 5-1 after doubling down on the winless Panthers, 42-21. Tua Tagovailoa threw three touchdown passes and Raheem Mostert scored another two TDs on the ground, as the Fins’ high-flying offense puts them back in the conversation as the best team in the league right now.

Joining Miami, Philly, and San Fran with a record of five wins and one loss is Detroit, which also wants to throw its name into the hat of top Super Bowl Contenders after six weeks of action. This time around, the Lions won on the strength of their improving defense, which held the Buccaneers to just six points resulting in a 13-point win in Tampa. The Lions are off to their best start in over a decade and, like the Dolphins, remain one of the most entertaining and compelling teams to follow this season.

LA’s Kupp Runneth Over

Not missing a beat since an untimely injury derailed his 2023 campaign is stud Rams wideout Cooper Kupp, who finished with seven catches for 148 receiving yards and a touchdown during his team’s 26-9 rout of the Cardinals. The former Offensive Player of the Year looked like his former self as Matthew Stafford’s top target in the passing game, with the Rams improving to 3-3 in a suddenly wide-open NFC West division race.

Los Angeles also gashed Arizona’s run defense to the tune of 158 rushing yards from running back Kyren Williams alone, with Williams accountable for the Rams’ other TD of the contest. With the Niners and Seahawks both losing in Week 6, Sean McVay and his boys are slowly rediscovering their former Super Bowl-winning form to make the NFC West division race much more interesting.

Belichick’s Nightmare Season Continues

Future Hall-of-Fame head coach Bill Belichick still had no answers as to how he could get the proud Patriots franchise back on the right path. The Pats failed to avenge their miserable loss to the Raiders from last season, as Vegas hung on to a 21-17 home win in Week 6. Mac Jones remained a liability under center, throwing another costly pick and getting sacked four times by the Raiders’ constant pressure.

The Patriots are in freefall mode as the rumors of Belichick’s retirement after this lost season continue to intensify. Things don’t get any easier for the Pats in Week 7, as they’re currently heavy (+9.5) home dogs as they’re set to take on Josh Allen and the Bills up next. On the bright side, Buffalo’s defense found it hard to close out the one-win Giants on Sunday Night Football to give New England a glimmer of hope at staging the league’s next groundbreaking upset.
