2023 SEC Championship Odds and Preview

By Jeff Stinger

College football goes through the Southeastern Conference once more, as defending national champion Georgia aims for the rare three-peat in 2023. But like each and every year, the SEC is a hotbed for the best competition in the sport, and the Bulldogs know better than to rest on their laurels with their conference rivals hot on their heels.

Nitrobetting is here to take your bets into the end zone this 2023 NCAA Football season. This time, let’s break down several teams that are seen as favorites, sleepers, and long shots to win the 2023 SEC Championship and their corresponding odds of becoming the next conference champion.

Odds to Win the 2023 SEC Championship

Favorites

Georgia Bulldogs

Georgia’s title defense won’t be easy, to say the least, but the team had already proved that it can retool just as easily for the following campaign with its credibility as the next NCAA powerhouse. Carson Beck is a decent candidate to assume the starting quarterback role and will be aided by the best collegiate tight end Brock Bowers to keep the offense humming. It goes without saying that the Bulldogs’ elite defense is still expected to dominate the scene. A well-rounded and experienced program is what makes Georgia the current consensus favorite to win the SEC in 2023.

Alabama Crimson Tide

While Georgia is an easy pick to win the SEC East, it’s tougher to make a strong case for the Crimson Tide to maintain their hold as the one true force in the West division. Head coach Nick Saban saw the departure of stud linebacker Will Anderson to the NFL Draft and will have to decide between Jalen Milroe, Ty Simpson, and Notre Dame transfer Tyler Buchner for the starting QB role. Despite a handful of issues, Alabama is a well-run program that is expected to contend not just as a co-favorite to win the SEC title, but the national title altogether.

Dark Horses

Tennessee Volunteers

Remember last year when the Volunteers took down the Tide in one of the most memorable games of the past decade? Those Volunteers averaged the most offensive yards per game in all of Division I (525.5 YPG) and are expected to contend for the SEC throne with head coach Josh Heupel leading the way. Like ‘Bama, though, Heupel is at a crossroads with giving the starting QB job to either Joe Milton or Nico Iamaleava. Nonetheless, the Vols are an intriguing sleeper pick to go the distance and change the landscape of the SEC with both Georgia and Alabama in a more vulnerable position just as the majority of the conference.

Ole Miss Rebels

Losing five of the last six games of the season certainly stung for Ole Miss, which squandered its amazing 7-0 start to last season. Still, the Rebels proved what they’re capable of in this top-heavy conference and will be motivated to surpass expectations once more. Jaxon Dart is a solid holdover at QB, and so too is Quinshon Judkins, who’s arguably the best running back in the entire SEC. With this one-two punch on offense, Ole Miss is another compelling sleeper pick to win the conference championship game, albeit with a subpar defense holding back their chances quite significantly.

Huge Reach

Vanderbilt Commodores

That’s now four consecutive losing seasons for the Commodores, who did improve with a 5-7 record in 2022 after racking up just five wins in the three prior seasons combined. Unfortunately, Vanderbilt’s offense ranked at the bottom of the SEC for the second straight year, and not a lot of people expect sophomore quarterback A.J. Swann to make the next leap with the lack of support during the offseason. As such, Vandy is sadly a long shot to stun the entire conference, despite the decent amount of strides of progress the program made last season.
