2023 Tour de France Favorites

By Jeff Stinger

With the 110th Tour de France a few days away from its opening stage, odds have opened for the biggest cycling event of the year. It’s not surprising to find 2022 winner Jonas Vingengaard topping the charts. The 21-stage race starts on Saturday, July 1 in Bilbao, Spain. The riders cross into France in the third stage with the final leg happening in Paris in July 2023.

A total of 22 cycling teams compete in the Tour with the Yellow Jersey as the most coveted award of the event. With a plethora of the world’s best riders lining up to race this coming weekend, Nitrobetting takes a deep dive into the betting favorites and what makes them stand out among the rest of the peloton.

Top 3 Favorite Picks for 2023 Tour de France

Tadej Pogačar

  • 2023 Tour de France Odds: +110

Riding for the UAE Team Emirates cycling team is 24-year-old Tadej Pogačar. The Slovenian is having a great 2023 season, winning the top podium finish at the following races: Jaén Paraíso Interior, Ruta del Sol, Paris-Nic, Tour of Flanders, Amstel Gold Race, and La Flèche Wallonne. Furthermore, he improved his portfolio with a fourth-place finish at Milan-San Remo and third at E3 Classic. It was a positive spring campaign for the versatile rider. However, faced a bittersweet ending when he suffered a fractured wrist at Liège-Bastogne-Liège leading to several weeks off the saddle.

It remains to be seen if his long indoor training session will compensate for several weeks off the road. Nevertheless, the two-time winner reiterated that he is not worried. Pogačar will have to be in top form to put pressure on the +109 top favorite Jonas Vingegaard, and revenge has likely been his fuel ever since last year’s finale. For bettors wanting to be on the safer side of things, the Slovenian offers competitive odds within the top three.

Jai Hindley

  • 2023 Tour de France Odds: +1,400

The 27-year-old is itching to make a mark on the tour. He rides with Bora-Hansgrohe for a second year in hopes of wearing the Yellow Jersey in Paris. Hindley’s 2023 results feature the following: 16th at Tour Down Under, 32nd at Cadel Evans Race, 13th at Volta ao Algarve, 15th at Tirreno-Adriatico, eighth at Volta a Catalunya, 12th at Amstel Gold Race, and a fourth-place finish at Critérium du Dauphiné.

Hindley’s season peaks at the right time. His finishes on the fringes at Catalunya and the Amstel Gold Race tell us he can hang with the 2023 Tour favorites. Consistent climbing at the mock Tour de France was offset by one of the best time trial rides of his career, setting foundations and helping his form increase steadily. While Vingegaard and Pogačar look like a cut above the rest, there’s reason to believe that Hindley can start adding pressure on the two. He’s expected to make his debut Tour with overflowing energy as the 2022 Giro d’Italia winner appears to be primed to make a statement come July.

Enric Mas

  • 2023 Tour de France Odds: +2,300

Movistar rider Enric Mas’ best result in the Tour was a fifth-place finish in 2020. He followed that up with a sixth-place finish in 2021. The 28-year-old is in his third year with Movistar and ranks among the favorites of the upcoming competition. Enric recorded positive results this year, including a fifth-place finish at Ruta del Sol, sixth at Tirreno-Adriatico, fifth at Itzulia Basque, and 17th at the most recent Critérium du Dauphiné.

Mas is locked and loaded and looks every bit like a Tour de France podium contender. He matched his second places in the Vuelta and Il Lombardia with aggression, which is something fans want to see from him. While he was slightly off-shape at the Critérium du Dauphiné, his previous performances still hold him up to high expectations. There’s work to be done to make sure he does not get dropped in the mountains. Additionally, Mas is ready to move on from his disappointing 2022 Tour de France showing when he abandoned the race after catching COVID-19.
