Stage 13
The INEOS Grenadiers came out victorious in Stage 13 thanks to Michal Kwiatkowski. The Polish cyclist won the stage atop the “Beyond Category” Grand Colombier after pacing with the breakaway and attacking the lower slopes of the final ascend. It was clear throughout most of the near-140 kilometer ride from Chatillon-Sur-Chalaronne to the peak of the Grand Colombier that UAE Team Emirates wanted to prime their GC contender Tadej Pogacar and -106 favorite for the win. However, the 33-year-old Kwiatkowski proved too strong to catch. The super-domestique held off Lotto-Soudal’s rider Maxim Van Gils and then Pogacar to record his second Tour de France stage victory.
Although UAE Team Emirates didn’t win the stage, they look forward to a tight race to the end of the 2023 Tour de France. The team rode an impressive stage, controlling the peloton throughout much of the day and setting a brutal pace up the final climb to drop the yellow jersey group.
But that was just a minor blow, as British rider Adam Yates and +3,900 winner attacked the group two kilometers from the summit, bringing Vinvegaard’s teammate Sepp Kuss with him and then Vingegaard and Pogacar. The two-time champion saved his legs for the final attack to the finish line, and while Vingegaard was right behind him he eventually slowed down due to Pogacar’s intense acceleration. Jumbo-Visma thinks the Alps will serve as the Tour’s most important field, but UAE is more than confident with an arsenal of competent riders to show for.
Stage 14
Carlos Rodriguez waves the Spanish flag after winning Stage 14 of the 2023 Tour de France. It was a wild day in the General Classification. The +4,900 winner fell behind on the final climb up the Joux Plane, but reeled himself in on the descent, and gap the two GC leaders and rode to the stage victory. Rodriguez also went up the GC standings after the day.
We anticipated explosive rides on Stage 14 and witnessed exactly that. But at the end of the day, there was hardly any movement within the top five of the Tour. That said, the biggest winner of the day stays with Carlos Rodriguez and his team, the INEOS Grenadiers. The youngster, at only 22-years-old, capitalized on Pogacar and -119 favorite Vingegaard fixating on the overall GC standings. He took everyone by surprise on the descent in the run-in to the finish and claimed victory on the day. He now sits behind the two race leaders and a provisional podium place.
Stage 15
Wout Poels of Bahrain Victorious and +10,000 winner snatches Stage 15 of the Tour de France after an excellent ride from the breakaway. He single handedly took down a talented group on his way to a first Tdf Stage victory. The Dutch cyclist spent most of the day in the breakaway, but his strength showed throughout the stage. He kept his head down and joined an attacking group with about 35 kilometers to go in the stage. That small group included Wout Van Aert, Marc Soler, and Krists Neilands. In the early parts of the climb, Poels darted through Van Aert and slowly extended his lead.
Furthermore, Stage 15 was a good day for Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard. The rivalry was magnified going up the Mont Blanc as the two finished together at the end of Stage 15. Vinvegaards yellow jersey advantage remains at ten seconds as the peloton enters the rest day on Monday before the final week. The margins couldn’t be tighter, and bettors are loving this close GC battle.
