2022 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Recap

In 2022, the season’s PGA Tour Player of the Year Scottie Scheffler beat Kevin Kisner 4-3. Scheffler had to go through Dustin Johnson in the semifinals.

DJ has moved to LIV Golf. So Johnson won’t play in this. Corey Connors beat Johnson 3-to-1 in the third-place game last year.

Abraham Ancer, Brooks Koepka, Will Zalatoris, and Seamus Power were the other golfers that made it to the quarterfinals.

2023 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Top Pick

Scottie Scheffler started the season finishing a tied forty-fifth at The CJ Cup last October. Since then, he’s played the type of golf that makes him the best player in the world.

In the nine tournaments Scheffler has played since The CJ Cup, he hasn’t finished worse than a tied twelfth. Scottie finished in the top ten in 7-of-9.

He has 5 top five finishes in the nine tournaments played. Scheffler won the WM Phoenix Open. Then he finished fourth at the Arnold Palmer and won The Players Championship in the last. Scottie on fire.

2023 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Second Pick

After starting hot, Jon Rahm’s form has tailed off. At the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the best Rahm could do is finish a tied thirty-ninth.

Jon didn’t bounce back with a good effort at The Players Championship. In fact, his performance was worse. Rahm withdrew after shooting a 71 first round.

If any golfer can turn it around, it’s Jon Rahm. Before the debacle at TPC-Sawgrass, and before the Arnold Palmer, Rahm had three wins and seven straight top ten finishes in his first seven tournaments played this season.

2023 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Third Pick

Collin Morikawa has missed the cut in two of his last four tournaments played. But when Collin made the cut, he performed well.

The third pick finished fourth at the Genesis Invitational. Then at The Players Championship, Morikawa finished a tied thirteenth.

Collin should excel in match play. He can make the type of shots that could intimidate his group foes: Jason Day, Victor Perez, and Adam Svensson. Morikawa has a decent chance to lift the trophy.

2023 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Underdog Pick

Unlike 2022, Will Zalatoris has yet to find his best form. Will finished a tied fifty-third at the Arnold Palmer and seventy-third at The Players Championship.

But Zalatoris has shown the form that led to a second at the U.S. Open last season when finishing fourth at the Genesis Invitational. If Will can be consistent, he’ll have a chance.

Also, Zalatoris is the top seed in Group 7. Will faces Andrew Putnam, Harris English, and Ryan Fox. Will should beat all three of those peers and then head to the next round with confidence. Zalatoris rates as the WGC-Dell Technologies’ top underdog play.
