AL Favorites

Juan Soto and Aaron Judge are on the same team. Both are New York Yankees. Soto is the favorite ahead of Judge because AJ’s stats weren’t up to par last season: .267 average, 37 home runs, and 75 RBIs.

Soto hit .275, posted 109 RBIs, and hit 35 home runs. But, really, neither is worth a pick because the Yankees may not be as solid this season as so many believe. With Shohei Ohtani now in the National League, this feels like oddsmakers were scrambling to find chalk.

AL Smart Pick

Seager’s OPS in 2023 was a fantastic 1.013. The smart AL choice also hit .327 with 33 home runs and 96 RBIs.

There’s a chance Seager improves in every phase this season. Not only that, but the Rangers come off a World Series win. So the chemistry is there. Bruce Bochy will get his star shortstop the looks Seager requires to against post monster numbers and without Ohtani in the AL, Seager is the one who could replace him as MVP.

AL Underdog Play

How about backing Shohei Ohtani’s former Halo teammate to win Most Valuable Player? Trout didn’t have a fantastic season, but he played in just 82 games and had just 308 at-bats.

In that respect, the .263batting average, 44 RBIs, and 18 home runs aren’t terrible. Also, without Ohtani in the lineup, the Angels will make sure Trout gets the best possible looks so he can unleash the talent that made him the former AL MVP.

NL Favorites

Of the two favorites, Ronald Acuna Jr. is the pick. Mookie Betts will have a fantastic season for sure, but Betts did about as well as he could last season: .307 average, 39 home runs, 107 RBIs, and he still finished second to Acuna.

The chalk hit .337 with 41 home runs and batted in 106 runs. Acuna should post similar, if not better, stats in 2024. The Braves will also win a lot of games because of their starting rotation. So give the Atlanta player the nod over the Dodgers player.

NL Smart Pick

Based on playing just 126 games, Bryce Harper had an outstanding 2023. Harper belted 21 home runs, batted in 72, and hit .293.

Those are terrific stats for a player that has won multiple MVP awards in the past. The .900 OPS in 126 games is also fantastic. Expect Harper to return to the NL MVP discussion like he has in every season since his rookie MLB season.

NL Underdog Play

Riley’s 2023 stats aren’t Ronald Acuna-like, but they’re not bad. Austin hit .281 with 37 home runs and knocked in 97. The .861 OPS is decent.

Acuna, Betts, and Harper would have to post subpar stats in 2024. If it happens, Riley could be the one that picks up the slack. So at 25-to-1 odds, Austin is for sure worth a look.
