Why Bet on the San Francisco 49ers?
In last Sunday’s 27-7 win over Seattle, the Niners saw Lance go down with a broken ankle and he had surgery on Monday. That means the guy the team traded three first-round picks to move up to No. 3 for in the 2021 NFL Draft will have started only four games in his first two seasons.
Lance’s injury came on a second-down run on a zone-read play in which he had the option to hand it to receiver Ray-Ray McCloud or keep it himself and run it up the middle. Lance chose the latter and, after gaining 2 yards, collided with Seahawks linebacker Cody Barton. Lance fell awkwardly and his right ankle seemed to fold underneath him. Initially, Lance appeared poised to get back up, and center Jake Brendel tried to help him, but he quickly went back down and the cart was brought out to help him off the field. There is some speculation that Lance could make a full recovery in 10-12 weeks, making a return this season at least possible.
“He was already a general on the field,” running back Jeff Wilson said of Lance. “He already had the respect of everybody. So none of that was ever the problem. It hurts to see because you can tell—you know how you can tell that somebody is really becoming comfortable, like feels good in their own skin?
At least the 49ers were smart enough to keep Garoppolo this summer instead of trading him or releasing him. Garoppolo was given permission to seek an offseason trade, and a few teams explored a potential deal. Other teams were more willing to pounce if the 49ers released him, believing they could sign Garoppolo to a more affordable contract than the $25 million cap charge he was carrying. But because he was rehabbing from a relatively uncommon shoulder surgery, the trade designs fell through, and the 49ers understood that he was far too valuable to let walk for nothing.
The Niners are also banged up at running back with No. 1 Elijah Mitchell perhaps out two months and rookie Tyrion Davis-Price hurt last week and likely to miss a few weeks. This week, the team signed veteran Marlon Mack to potentially back up Jeff Wilson until Mitchell returns. Pro Bowl tight end George Kittle has yet to play this season due to injury but might be ready Sunday.
Why Bet on the Denver Broncos?
Denver didn’t look good Week 1 and lost 17-16 in Seattle and didn’t look very good last week, either, but beat visiting Houston 16-9. Broncos Roundtable: How much is Russell Wilson to blame for offense’s red zone issues? The Broncos are 0-for-6 in red zone possessions to start the season. Out of 16 plays inside the opponents’ 10, the Broncos have thrown it 12 times — and Wilson’s only completed five of them.
A good day from the Broncos’ rushing tandem of Javonte Williams and Melvin Gordon III could go a long way to helping Wilson, but the 49ers’ rush defense, led by linebacker Fred Warner, currently ranks No. 1 in the league in yards allowed per carry.
The Broncos saw starting receiver Jerry Jeudy and young star cornerback Patrick Surtain to injury against the Texans but both are being called day-to-day for this one. Jeudy suffered a rib injury while getting slammed to the turf on a flea-flicker pass attempt. Surtain suffered a shoulder injury.
Since a week prior to their opener at Seattle, the Broncos lost starting safety Justin Simmons (quad), right guard Quinn Meinerz (hamstring), linebacker Josey Jewell and receiver KJ Hamler (groin, hip, ACL). Right tackle Billy Turner has yet to return from knee surgery, tight end Greg Dulcich has yet to play because of a hamstring injury and receiver Tim Patrick suffered an ACL tear in training camp.
