Arizona Cardinals 2024 NFL Season Win/Loss Total

By Jeff Stinger

The Arizona Cardinals went 4-13 in the 2022 season and fired coach Kliff Kingsbury. The club then went 4-13 again this past season under first-year coach Jonathan Gannon. If things don’t improve in 2024, Gannon might already be a goner.

Arizona’s strength of schedule is No. 24 in the NFL, as its opponents had a combined winning percentage of .488 last year. Three of the first four are at home, although five of the first six games are against playoff teams.

The Cards are 7.5-point underdogs at Buffalo on Sept. 8 in Week 1. It’s the second year in a row the Cards will travel to the Eastern edge of the country. Last year they opened in Washington. One huge plus — won’t have to worry about a Buffalo blizzard on opening weekend. The Cardinals have the NFC North and AFC East as their main competition next season, as well as their usual NFC West work.

The 2024 NFL Draft

The Cardinals are definitely in the midst of a rebuild and landed the No. 1 wide receiver prospect in the 2024 NFL Draft in Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr. with the No. 4 overall pick – the Cards had a lot of teams calling to get No. 4 to take a QB and could have traded back but wanted to get Harrison. He fills a massive hole for the Cardinals, who haven’t had a true No. 1 wideout since DeAndre Hopkins and a great young receiver since Larry Fitzgerald 20 years ago. Harrison likely will be Kyler Murray’s No. 1 target from Day 1.

“I know there is evaluation fatigue when it comes to the draft process, and they want to nitpick what he can do and what he can’t do,” quarterback Kyler Murray said. “But he’s been good at football his whole life. He’s been groomed by one of the best, his Pops, a Hall of Famer, and there’s not much to think about. He plays the game at a high level. It’s a new level for him, but I have no doubt he’ll do his thing this year.”

The entire receiving room will look different this year from last, other than Michael Wilson for the most part. Gone are Hollywood Brown and Rondale Moore. Drafted were Harrison Jr., Tejhaun Palmer and Xavier Weaver was added as an undrafted rookie. And the team signed Chris Moore and Zay Jones in free agency. Jones was limited to nine games last season in Jacksonville, making 34 receptions for 321 yards and four touchdowns. His best season was in 2022, also with the Jaguars, when he had 82 catches for 823 yards and five touchdowns for a playoff team.

The Return of Andy Murray

Murray is finally healthy, after the former No. 1 overall pick missed the on-field portion of last year’s offseason while he recovered from right knee ACL surgery. Even though he was at practice every day, his injury forced him to stand and watch. This offseason was different. Murray returned for the last eight games of last season, and he was on the field for all voluntary OTAs and mandatory minicamp. He took advantage of it, diving deeper into the nuances of an offense he learned on the fly in a three-week lead up to his debut last season.

The Cardinals are “operating a little better right now” with Murray back, Gannon said. It’s a combination of being in the second year of a new regime, a new scheme and a new roster, but it’s also because Murray is able to run the offense. To help protect Murry, the club signed former Bengals offensive tackle Jonah Williams to a two-year, $30 million free-agent deal.

Williams replaces D.J. Humphries, the Cardinals’ longtime left tackle who was released this offseason. With the addition of Williams, the Cardinals now have bookend tackles, along with Paris Johnson Jr., who’s entering his second season. Johnson played all 17 games at right tackle in 2023, not moving to left tackle for the season finale after DJ Humphries’ injury.

The Cards’ Defensive Line

The Cardinals’ defensive line rotation for the final game (in order of snaps) of the season last year was Roy Lopez, Phil Hoskins, Ben Stille, Naquan Jones and Leki Fotu. Only Fotu was on the roster when the season began. It became a point of emphasis this offseason. Lopez is back for a full year, Dante Stills can build on his rookie year, and Darius Robinson was a first-round pick. Justin Jones, Bilal Nichols and Khyiris Tonga highlighted the free-agent class.

Robinson was the No. 27 overall pick in this year’s draft out of Missouri. The Cardinals are coming off a season with just 33 sacks, their fewest since 2010, so addressing their pass rush was a priority heading into the draft. Robinson can play inside and outside, giving him enough versatility to stay on the field for all three downs. He finished with 8.5 sacks and 35 pressures, each the fourth-most in the SEC last season.
