Atlanta is tied for the easiest schedule in the NFL this season, as its opponents had a winning percentage of .453 in 2023. The Falcons are 2.5-pont home favorites Week 1 vs. Pittsburgh. The Steelers’ new offensive coordinator is Arthur Smith. The Falcons have four prime-time games on the 2024 schedule as well. Atlanta is the only winless team in prime-time games since 2021. Cousins is 12-19 in career prime-time games.
Atlanta was in the NFC South race deep into last season but was blown out in its final two games in Chicago and New Orleans – the Falcons had an outside chance to win the NFC South with a victory in Week 18 against the Saints. Atlanta scored touchdowns on its first two series, then managed just three points the rest of the way while being outscored 41-3 over the rest of a must-win game.
That was the final straw for owner Arthur Blank as he fired Coach Arthur Smith, who finished 21-30 in his three seasons with the team. Smith was brought in as an offensive-minded coach when he was hired in January 2021, with his previous job having been offensive coordinator of the Titans. Despite some young offensive weapons — Atlanta used high-first-round picks on tight end Kyle Pitts, wide receiver Drake London and running back Bijan Robinson — the offense never flourished, finishing 26th in scoring in 2021 and 2023 and tied for 15th in 2022. It never averaged more than 22 points in a season.
Lost of Changes in the Camp
While the Falcons considered hiring Bill Belichick to replace Smith as head coach, they opted to bring back Raheem Morris instead. He went 4-7 as the team’s interim head coach in 2020 after the Falcons parted ways with Dan Quinn. Morris had spent the past three seasons as the Rams’ defensive coordinator. The Falcons’ last winning and playoff seasons happened during Morris’ tenure, 2016-17 as their defensive coordinator. In 2016, the Falcons lost to the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.
Inconsistent quarterback play was a major problem under Smith with Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke sharing the job last season. Ridder was traded away and Heinicke likely will be third string this season if he’s not released as the Falcons signed free-agent QB Kirk Cousins from Minnesota and then shockingly drafted Michael Penix Jr. out of Washington with the No. 8 overall pick even though Cousins has a four-year contract worth $180 million. Then again, Cousins will be 36 by the start of the season and is coming off a torn Achilles’ tendon that ended his 2023 season early with the Vikings. Cousins puts up good stats year after year but has often drawn criticism for his play against strong competition, as he holds a career record of 14-43 when facing teams above .500.
The Falcons were widely panned for taking Penix when they had so many other needs. Cousins is their starter as the team enters win-now mode with the 2024 season looming. Penix will be able to learn and develop behind Cousins. Then, when the time does come for a personnel change, Penix can seamlessly step into the role of QB1. The QB position is much better than it was in January.
Atlanta’s biggest move in free agency (besides Cousins) was signing wide receiver Darnell Mooney to a deal that included $26 million fully guaranteed and it also got another wideout in Rondell Moore in Arizona in trading Ridder to the Cardinals. Mooney struggled to fill the Bears’ No. 2 receiver role behind DJ Moore last year. The 5-foot-11 receiver had a career-low 31 catches for 414 yards and a touchdown in 2023, one season after his 2022 campaign was cut short by an ankle injury./p>
The Falcons’ Defensive Line
Defensively, top tackle Grady Jarrett saw his 2023 season end with a torn ACL. The Atlanta native missed all OTAs and said his goal is to be ready to practice at mostly full strength when training camp begins in late July. Even without being able to be out there on the field, Jarrett has taken on a role of mentor with Atlanta in the past, and he will again with the team drafting three defensive linemen — Ruke Orhorhoro, Brandon Dorlus and Zion Logue.
