By Jeff Stinger

Everything was set up for the Baltimore Ravens to finally return to the Super Bowl last season as they were the AFC’s top seed and finally got to face Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in Baltimore in the postseason instead of in Kansas City. It still didn’t matter as KC continued its recent dominance of the AFC. But the Ravens look loaded again entering the 2024 campaign.

Baltimore has the second-toughest schedule in the NFL this season, as their opponents combined for a .536 winning percentage last season. The playoff teams Baltimore will face are Cleveland (2x), Pittsburgh (2x), Philadelphia, Buffalo, Kansas City, Dallas, Houston, and Tampa Bay.

The Ravens’ schedule is so challenging because the AFC North was the best division in the NFL last year, the Ravens will face the other first-place finishers in the AFC, and Baltimore faces two other divisions that were relatively strong last year in the AFC West and NFC East. The Ravens have five prime-time games, plus a Christmas Day game and a Saturday game. So that’s seven nationally-televised games.

Baltimore opens in Kansas City on Sept. 5 in an AFC title game rematch, with the Chiefs as 2.5-point favorites. The Ravens are 12-4 in Week 1 under Head Coach John Harbaugh. They have won seven of their last eight Week 1 games, with the only loss coming in overtime in Las Vegas in 2021.

Looking Back at 2023

Baltimore routed Houston 34-10 in the Divisional Round of last season’s playoffs and was favored to beat visiting Kansas City in the AFC title game, but the offense went quiet in a 17-10 loss. The Chiefs led 17-7 at halftime, and Justin Tucker’s 43-yard field goal with 2:34 to play was the only scoring of the second half. The Ravens made undisciplined mistakes all game.

It was the first time Baltimore hosted an AFC championship game since January 1971, when the Colts beat the Oakland Raiders. Lamar Jackson went 20 of 37 for 272 yards and a touchdown, but Baltimore never really exploited its perceived advantage on the ground.

Jackson won his second regular-season MVP, becoming just the 11th player in league history to be named MVP multiple times. After winning his first in 2019 by unanimous vote, joining Tom Brady as the only unanimous winners in league history, Jackson fell just one vote short of doing it again. Jackson received 49 of 50 first place votes. He finished the regular season with career highs in passing yards (3,678), completions (307), completion percentage (67.2), and average yards per completion (8) while throwing 24 touchdown passes and just seven interceptions.

Jackson led the Ravens and all NFL quarterbacks with 821 yards rushing, averaging 5.5 yards per carry, while continuing to stress defenses with his arm and mobility. In November, Jackson became the fastest quarterback in league history to reach 5,000 yards rushing, achieving that milestone 22 games faster than Michael Vick.

The Ravens got Jackson quite a bit of help in former NFL Offensive Player and rushing champion Derrick Henry in the backfield. The deal could be worth up to $20 million, including $9 million guaranteed in the first year. Henry should lessen the load for Jackson, who has led the Ravens in rushing in each of the past five seasons. In Jackson’s six seasons, only one running back has gained over 1,000 yards rushing in Baltimore (Mark Ingram in 2019). Henry has rushed for over 1,000 yards in five of his past six seasons, including topping the NFL in 2019 and 2020.

The Ravens, who led the NFL with 2,661 yards rushing last season, needed a starting running back because J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards were both free agents. Both then signed with the LA Chargers.

There is offensive line turnover. Tackle Morgan Moses and guard John Simpson went to the Jets via free agency and a trade, respectively. Guard Kevin Zeitler left for Detroit, and they’ll have to rely on their depth and possibly rookie tackle Roger Rosengarten to reshape that unit, which might get dicey.

Defensively, bringing back Justin Madubuike was a big win, though Baltimore also lost Patrick Queen and Geno Stone. Madubuike, a burgeoning star, signed a four-year, $98 million extension. The 26-year-old led all defensive tackles with 13 sacks and matched the league single-season record with at least half a sack in 11 straight games. He added career highs of 56 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 33 quarterback hits and two forced fumbles.
