Buffalo Bills 2024 NFL Season Win/Loss Total

By Hank Blaine

The Buffalo Bills have been to the playoffs for five straight years and six of the past seven yet are still looking for their first Super Bowl trip since losing four straight in the early 1990s. Might that happen in 2024? We break down Josh Allen & Co. If the Bills don’t finally get back to the big game, Coach Sean McDermott might be a goner despite all his regular-season success.

The Bills are tied for the sixth-toughest schedule in the NFL, as their opponents had a combined winning percentage of .516 last year. They are 7.5-point home favorites for Week 1 vs. Arizona. The Bills have won four of the five all-time meetings between the two franchises in Buffalo. Buffalo then visits Miami on Thursday night in Week 2. The Bills are 4-1 in their last five matchups against the Dolphins in Miami, including their AFC East division-clinching victory in Week 18 last season (21-14).

This year, Buffalo has a total of five prime-time games, one short of their record of six set last season. The Bills also had five prime-time games in 2022. Buffalo overall faces seven playoff teams from last season in 2024, including back-to-back games against the defending AFC and NFC champions. It’s the fifth straight year the Bills have faced the Chiefs in the regular season, with Buffalo winning the last three matchups. Kansas City, however, won the last meeting in Orchard Park in 2020 (26-17).

Close to the End

Buffalo might have been to a couple of Super Bowls recently if not for Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. The Bills finally got a home playoff game against Mahomes and were favored in the Divisional Round matchup on Jan. 21 but lost to the Chiefs yet again 27-24. The outcome was decided when Buffalo kicker Tyler Bass missed a potential game-tying field goal wide right from 44 yards, allowing the Chiefs to run out the remaining 1:47.

QB Josh Allen blamed himself for having Buffalo’s final drive stall at the Chiefs 26 following two incompletions — the last a throwaway after he was flushed out of the pocket.

“I wish he wouldn’t have been put in that situation. You win as a team, you lose as a team. One play doesn’t define a game, doesn’t define a season,” Allen said. “Losing sucks. Losing to them, losing to anybody.”

KC is accustomed to ending the Bills’ season, having done it now in three of the past four playoffs, with the first two wins coming at home in the 2020 AFC championship game and the 2021 divisional round.

How Are the Bills Right Now?

The Bills are not as good on paper as last year’s team because they traded away Pro Bowl receiver Stefon Diggs to Houston as Diggs had been unhappy with the Bills for a while. The Bills received a 2025 second-round pick (via the Minnesota Vikings) in exchange for Diggs, a 2024 sixth-round pick (No. 189 overall) and a 2025 fifth-round selection. It left a Buffalo team square in its Super Bowl window with arguably the NFL’s second-best quarterback in Allen without a serious threat at wide receiver, especially after Gabe Davis left in free agency, too.

Diggs set a variety of team and league records during his time with the team, including being one of four players in NFL history to record four consecutive seasons with 100-plus receptions (Antonio Brown, Davante Adams and Marvin Harrison are the others). But Diggs’ production decreased following the first six games of the 2023 season. He did not have another 100-yard receiving game the rest of the season and only caught three more touchdowns.

The Bills addressed the wideout with its first selection in the draft, taking Florida State’s Keon Coleman at No. 33 overall. After spending his first two collegiate seasons at Michigan State, Coleman transferred to FSU in 2023. He earned first-team All-ACC honors and generated 11 touchdowns and 658 yards on 50 catches. Third-year receiver Khalil Shakir looks like an emerging talent with 2.05 yards per route run last season, and the Bills signed free agent receivers Curtis Samuel, Mack Hollins and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Buffalo has moved on several veterans this offseason. Buffalo released cornerstone defensive players Tre’Davious White and Jordan Poyer and starting center Mitch Morse in salary cap moves. In addition, Davis signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars and outside linebacker Leonard Floyd signed with the San Francisco 49ers in free agency.
