The Panthers have one of the NFL’s easiest schedules this season, as their opponents combined for a .467 winning percentage in 2023. Carolina opens the season as a 5-point underdog at New Orleans. The Panthers lost both in the series last year, including 28-6 in the Big Easy in Week 14. Young finished 13 of 36 for 137 yards and lost a fumble. He was sacked four times. The home opener in Week 2 against the Chargers, and new head coach (and one-time Panthers QB) Jim Harbaugh.

Of the Panthers first eight games, three are at home, and five on the road. In Week 5, the last two No. 1 overall picks will face off, as Young and the Panthers travel to Chicago to take on Caleb Williams and the Bears.

Carolina is the only team without a prime-time kickoff in 2024. It’s the third time the Panthers have not had a prime-time game — 2002 (after going 1-15 in George Seifert’s final season) and 2011 (after going 2-14 in John Fox’s final season). The franchise’s first game in Germany and first trip to Las Vegas are among the notables for Canales’ squad.

Last Season’s Moves Didn’t Pay Off

The Panthers thought they made a smart trade for their future last offseason by sending a handful of draft picks, including first-rounders in 2023 and 2024 along with excellent young wideout DJ Moore to Chicago for the right to pick first in the 2023 draft. Carolina took Alabama QB Bryce Young, but he had nothing short of a disastrous rookie season as the Panthers finished with an NFL-worst 2-15 record – and had to watch as Chicago picked first overall in 2024 with Carolina’s pick.

When everything was falling apart in 2023, Young didn’t have anyone to turn to. Coach Frank Reich lost his job after 11 games, the offensive line failed to protect him, and it became clear the responsibilities were too much for Young to handle all on his own. He passed for 11 touchdowns to 10 interceptions with a 59.8 completion percentage. His QBR (33.3) ranked 29th of 30 qualified quarterbacks, better only than Zach Wilson of the New York Jets at 30.5.

The Panthers made a point of trying to make Young’s life easier this offseason. They spent a lot of money in free agency to sign guards Robert Hunt and Damian Lewis to improve the interior of their offensive line. The Panthers ranked 30th and 23rd in run block win rate and pass block win rate, respectively, in 2023, so upgrading the line was paramount. However, those two contracts look like overpays and Carolina is not in a particularly strong cap situation going forward.

Carolina’s receiver room was given a boost with the acquisition of Diontae Johnson in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers and drafting of Xavier Legette after trading up one spot for the No. 32 overall pick. Johnson caught 51 passes for 717 yards last year for the Steelers, but that was well off his previous numbers. He caught 86, 107, and 88 passes for the Steelers the previous three seasons.

Meanwhile, the Panthers traded with the Buffalo Bills to move into the first round at No. 32 and take the local Carolina product Legette from South Carolina. Legette spent five years with the Gamecocks, breaking out particularly in his final season. In 2023, he pulled in 71 receptions for 1,255 yards and seven touchdowns. This mark made Legette only the fifth receiver in Gamecocks history to surpass 1,000 yards, joining Sidney Rice, Alshon Jeffery, Pharoh Cooper, and Sterling Sharpe.

Head coach Dave Canales’ hiring is the most important change for Young. The 43-year-old was the quarterbacks coach for Geno Smith with the Seattle Seahawks in 2022 and offensive coordinator for Baker Mayfield with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2023. In 2022, Smith passed for a career-high 4,282 yards and 30 touchdowns with a 69.8 completion percentage in being named NFL Comeback Player of the Year. In 2023, Mayfield had a career-high 4,044 yards, 28 touchdowns and 64.3 completion percentage.

New Management

New Panthers GM Dan Morgan, a former All-Pro linebacker for the team, spent eight years with Canales on the Seattle Seahawks’ staff from 2010 to ’17 when Canales was the wide receivers coach. Familiarity with Morgan and being a disciple of former Seattle head coach Pete Carroll was a factor. Since David Tepper bought the Panthers in 2018, they are tied with the Jets for the worst record in the NFL (31-68). Canales will be their seventh head coach under Tepper, most of any team in that span.

Carolina did lose two of its best defensive players in end Brian Burns and safety Jeremy Chinn. Burns, the team’s 2019 first-rounder, had 46.0 sacks in five seasons and went to two Pro Bowls. He was shipped to the New York Giants for a couple of draft picks but no first-rounders. Chinn left for Washington in free agency. In 2020, Chinn earned PFWA All-Rookie team honors and finished second for Defensive Rookie of the Year. He also recorded 117 total tackles which ranks third by a rookie in a single season in Panthers history and was the most by all NFL rookies.
