The San Francisco 49ers are 2-0 against the Los Angeles Rams this season. Can they finish the LA trifecta by knocking off the Chargers on Sunday Night Football?
Sunday night’s game will mark the 15th regular-season meeting between these two teams. The Chargers hold a 8-6 all-time regular season advantage over the 49ers, including winning the last five. This will be the first time the Bolts and Niners play on Sunday Night Football. The last meeting between these two teams came on September 30, 2018. The Chargers were able to narrowly come away with a 29-27 win at home after they converted a go-ahead field goal with over seven minutes left.

Why Bet on the Los Angeles Chargers?
The Chargers came out of their bye last Sunday and won 20-17 in Atlanta. Cameron Dicker kicked a 37-yard game-ending field goal only three days after being signed as a free agent. Dicker also made a 31-yarder with 5:27 left, tying the game at 17. The rookie from Texas was signed to the practice squad and then activated in place of injured Dustin Hopkins. This was only Dicker’s second NFL game — he also made a late, go-ahead kick for the Philadelphia Eagles as an injury replacement in Week 5. Hopkins has not practiced yet this week and Coach Brandon Staley called Hopkins week to week last Wednesday, so it would not be a surprise if he misses another game.
The Bolts played without top wideouts Mike Williams and Keenan Allen and neither are likely to go here – Williams definitely won’t. Allen has not practiced at all since Oct. 21 when he was limited. He has not had a full practice since Week 1, the only week he wasn’t on the practice report with his hamstring injury. He injured his hamstring in the season opener and aggravated it in practice before the Week 4 game against the Texans. He returned in Week 7 to play 23 snaps and made two catches for 11 yards.
The Chargers have lost defensive tackle Austin Johnson for the season due to an injury vs. Atlanta. Johnson, a seventh-year pro, joins edge rusher Joey Bosa, cornerback J.C. Jackson and left tackle Rashawn Slater on injured reserve. Johnson ranked fifth among qualified interior defensive linemen in run-stop rate this season.
“I’m disappointed because Austin has been fantastic since he’s gotten here,” Coach Brandon Staley said. “We love coaching him, but this is part of the NFL.”
The Chargers are optimistic that Bosa will return at some point this season. Jackson and Slater, however, will not. Also, in the victory over the Falcons, right tackle Trey Pipkins III aggravated a left MCL issue and is day-to-day. If Pipkins is unable to go then Storm Norton is going to be playing right tackle against a 49ers pass rush that will likely eat him alive.
Why Bet on the San Francisco 49ers?
The Niners come off their bye week. Star wideout Deebo Samuel missed the team’s Week 8 game but is practicing this week. With Christian McCaffrey pacing San Francisco’s backfield and Elijah Mitchell (knee) potentially getting activated from IR this week, Samuel may not be afforded his usual allotment of carries moving forward. Still, Samuel is quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s top option in the passing game, so the wide receiver will look to continue building upon the 56 touches for 515 yards from scrimmage and three TDs in seven games.
Additionally, running back Elijah Mitchell, linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair and offensive lineman Colton McKivitz were all fully available this week after having their practice windows opened earlier in the week.
“This is the grind of the season now, this stretch we are about to go on,” linebacker Fred Warner said. “We need all our weapons. It’s good to see some familiar faces out there. Having Azeez back out on the field is great and a bunch of other guys.”
The four Niners on the injury report are DL Arik Armstead (foot, ankle), DL Samson Ebukam (Achilles, quad), LB Dre Greenlaw (calf) and CB Jason Verrett (knee). Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that Armstead is dealing with a stress reaction and hairline fracture of his left fibula and plantar fascia on his right foot.
