Chiefs vs. Eagles Super Bowl LVII Odds, Preview & Pick

By Hank Blaine

The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles have never met in the NFL postseason but that will change on Sunday, Feb. 12, from State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., as they meet in Super Bowl 57 with the Eagles as 1.5-point favorites. There have only been seven Super Bowls all-time with a spread of 2.5 or shorter.

The teams most recently played in Week 4 of the 2021 regular season and the Chiefs won 42-30 in Philadelphia. Patrick Mahomes threw five touchdown passes three different ways, including three to Tyreek Hill (now with Miami). Mahomes tossed TD passes underhanded, overhanded and shoveled one on Kansas City’s three possessions in the first half. He finished with 278 yards passing and his interception was the only possession the Chiefs didn’t score a TD. Hill had 11 catches for 186 yards.

It was the return to Philadelphia of former Eagles coach Andy Reid and it was his 100th career win with the Chiefs, becoming the first coach in NFL history to win 100 games with two teams. Jalen Hurts threw for a career-high 387 yards and two TDs but Philadelphia couldn’t keep up. The Eagles had three touchdowns negated by penalty and settled for field goals three times inside the red zone.

Why Bet on the Kansas City Chiefs?

Kansas City beat Cincinnati 23-20 in the AFC title game on a last-second field goal as Mahomes played through an ankle injury – he should be much healthier with the bye week ahead of the Super Bowl. He completed 29-of-43 passes for 326 yards and two touchdowns. Mahomes scrambled for a first down in the finals seconds and Cincinnati’s Joseph Ossai was called for a personal foul when he hit Mahomes out of bounds. That put Kansas City in range for the winning field goal.

Mahomes now has 32 career touchdown passes in the playoffs, matching Dan Marino for the eighth-most in NFL history. Additionally, Mahomes is now the youngest quarterback in league history to win double-digit playoff games. Mahomes is going to be named regular-season 2022 NFL MVP at the NFL Honors show next Thursday and Hurts is likely to finish second.

Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce caught 7-of-8 targets for 78 yards and a touchdown in the AFC title game despite a late back injury threatening his status. He and Eagles center Jason Kelce will become the first brothers to play against each other in the Super Bowl. Brothers have coached against each other in a Super Bowl: Jim vs John Harbaugh.

The week off is huge for Kansas City not for just Mahomes but with wide receivers Kadarius Toney, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman all leaving against the Bengals due to injuries as well as cornerback L’Jarius Sneed and linebacker Willie Gay.

Why Bet on the Philadelphia Eagles?

The Eagles have not been tested in these playoffs, blowing out both the New York Giants in the Divisional Round and the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC title game. The Eagles are the first NFL team since the 2000 Baltimore Ravens to allow 7-or-fewer points multiple times in a postseason.

During the regular season, the Chiefs led the AFC in points per game at 29.1 and the Eagles led the NFC at 28.1. This will be the seventh Super Bowl matchup between top-scoring offenses (PPG) in each conference. Both teams scored exactly 546 points in regular season and playoffs combined this season.

While the Chiefs are returning to the Super Bowl after a one-year absence, the Eagles are playing in their first since beating the Patriots in 2017. And in addition to Reid facing his old team, this year’s game will feature the youngest combined age between starting quarterbacks in Super Bowl history.

Veteran Carl Cheffers and his referee crew will oversee play for Super Bowl 57. This will mark the third time in the past six Super Bowls – including two of the last three – that Cheffers, who is the vice president of the NFL Referees Association, will be the referee of the NFL’s final game of the season. Cheffers’ crew worked 17 games this season (including a divisional round playoff game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills) and threw 214 penalty flags (26 declined, four offsetting) which averages to be 12.6 flags thrown.
