How unusual is that win total of 10.5? It’s Detroit’s highest win total over the last 35 seasons, surpassing last season’s mark of 9.5 (finished 12-5). Detroit is looking to go over its win total in three consecutive seasons for the first time since 1993-95.
Detroit has the 11th-toughest schedule in the NFL this season as its opponents had a combined 2023 winning percentage of .509. The Lions open on Sunday night at home against Stafford and the Rams in a playoff rematch with the Lions at -3.5. The Rams lost future Hall of Fame defensive tackle Aaron Donald to retirement this offseason. After their impressive 2023 campaign, the NFL has rewarded the Lions with nine nationally televised games for the 2024 season, including five primetime games (two Sunday night games, one Thursday night game, and a pair of Monday night games).
A Solid 2023
The Lions won the NFC North with a 12-5 mark last season – tying a franchise record for wins and their first division title in three decades. Detroit finished as the NFC’s No. 3 seed and hosted the Rams and former Lions QB Matthew Stafford in the wild-card round, winning 24-23 as Detroit) ended a nine-game postseason losing streak — the longest in NFL history — that dated to a victory over Dallas on Jan. 5, 1992. Detroit and former Rams QB Jared Goff was 22 of 27 for 277 yards and threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to rookie tight end Sam LaPorta that put Detroit ahead 21-10 midway through the second quarter.
Detroit then hosted Tampa Bay in the Divisional Round and won 31-23 behind two TDs from Goff to reach the NFC title game for the first time in 32 years and just the second time in franchise history. It appeared that the Lions were in control of the NFC title game in San Francisco the following week in leading 24-7 at the half but lost 34-31. The 49ers scored 17 points in an eight-minute span of the third quarter to tie the NFC championship game and then pulled away in the fourth quarter.
Campbell bypassed a chance at a game-tying field goal on fourth-and-3 from the Niners 30 midway through the fourth quarter. Goff threw an incomplete pass and the Niners drove to the insurance touchdown. Goff added a TD pass to Jameson Williams with 56 seconds to play, but the 49ers recovered the onside kick to seal the win.
The Offensive Strength
Detroit might have the best offense in the NFC now with Goff, stellar second-year running back Jahymr Gibbs, Pro Bowl wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown and excellent young tight end LaPorta. The offensive line is also one of the league’s best. Detroit scored 30-plus points in nine games in 2024, a franchise record.
Goff signed a four-year, $212 extension this offseason. He finished in the top four in both passing yards (4,575) and passing touchdowns (30) in 2024, propelling a Lions offense that finished third in yards per game.
St. Brown got a four-year, $120 million extension. The 24-year-old was selected as a first-team All-Pro last season when he set career bests with 119 catches, 1,515 yards and 10 touchdown receptions. He is one of only three players in NFL history to have 90 or more receptions in each of his first three seasons, joining Odell Beckham Jr. (2014-16) and Michael Thomas (2016-18). LaPorta broke the NFL rookie record for receptions in a season, finishing with 86 catches for 889 yards.He also became just the third rookie tight end in NFL history with double-digit receiving touchdowns, joining Mike Ditka (12 in 1961) and Rob Gronkowski (10 in 2010). Gibbs and LaPorta became the first pair of rookie teammates in NFL history to each score 10 or more touchdowns in a season.
Who Will Join the Squad?
This offseason, the Lions brought in DJ Reader at defensive tackle and signed Marcus Davenport on a one-year flier to fill a need at edge opposite Aidan Hutchinson. Though he only has 9.5 career sacks through eight seasons, Reader has at least 32 pressures in each of the last three seasons. He was graded the No. 10 interior run defender in the NFL last season. Davenport comes to Detroit after spending the 2023 season with the Vikings, where he appeared in four games (three starts) and recorded seven tackles (three solo), four quarterback hits and 2.0 sacks before missing the remainder of the season due to injury. The team also spent its first two draft picks filling out its major need at corner. Defense is the one concern.
