By Jeff Stinger

If the Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers face off again this season after Thursday’s matinee finale in Beer Town, it will be in the National League playoffs. And that’s quite possible because the Dodgers are locks to get there and the Brewers almost are.

Why bet on the Los Angeles Dodgers?

The Dodgers’ World Series chances took a big hit this week when one of the preseason NL Cy Young favorites, Walker Buehler, was ruled out for the season due to elbow surgery. It’s not clear what exactly is wrong in that elbow but if he needs Tommy John surgery then Buehler will miss all of next season as well. The procedure will take place Aug. 23 in Los Angeles. Buehler also had Tommy John surgery out of college after the Dodgers selected in the first round of the 2015 draft.

From 2018-2021, Buehler was one of the top starters in the National League, going 39-13 with a 2.82 ERA and 620 strikeouts in 564 regular-season innings while also coming through in several of the Dodgers’ biggest postseason games. But Buehler got off to a relatively slow start in 2022, allowed eight runs in 6⅓ innings in his first two June outings and was shut down because of a flexor strain.

The Dodgers are hopeful that three-time Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw, out since early August because of discomfort in his lower back, can still make it back in time to get built up for the playoffs.

The bullpen will get a boost very soon in the return of setup man Blake Treinen. Treinen (shoulder) threw a scoreless rehab inning Tuesday with Triple-A Oklahoma City. Treinen gave up a hit but finished his appearance with a strikeout. His sinker was clocked around 93-96 mph. The veteran is probably going to be asked to do a few more outings on the farm since he’s been out since April 14.

Former NL MVP Cody Bellinger likely will sit again Thursday for LA with manager Roberts termed it as a mental and physical “reset” for Bellinger, who is 8-for-40 (.200) so far in August and batting just .206/.261/.399 in 105 total games (417 plate appearances) on the season.

It will be lefty Andrew Heaney (1-0) on the bump Thursday for the Dodgers. He exited his most recent start Saturday against the Rockies when he took a line drive off his left arm but escaped with nothing more than a bruise to his pitching arm, and has been able to resume throwing without any discomfort. Because of two separate bouts with left shoulder trouble that required IL stints, Heaney has been limited to just 31 innings over seven starts this season. He has fared well when on the mound, pitching to a 1.16 ERA and 1.00 WHIP.

Why bet on the Milwaukee Brewers?

As of August 16, the Cubs have played great baseball. Chicago has won 4 of their last 6 games. The wins occurred versus two terrible teams, the Nationals and Reds, but wins are wins. Also, starter Keegan Thompson has dominated the Brewers in limited action versus Milwaukee, holding the Brew Crew to a single hit in 16 at-bats.
