The Loss of Aaron Rodgers

The Packers are long shots in the NFC North. We just aren’t used to typing that because the team has had at least one Hall of Fame quarterback – Brett Favre or Aaron Rodgers – on its roster since 1991. Rodgers’ final game with Green Bay was a brutal 20-16 home loss to Detroit in Week 18 last year when a win would have sent the Packers to the wild card round and perhaps would have convinced Rodgers to stay. He threw a crushing pick in that Lions loss.

Green Bay got a first-round selection (No. 13), a second-round pick (No. 42) and a sixth-round selection (No. 207) in 2023 and a conditional second-round choice in 2024 in exchange for Rodgers and a first-round selection (No. 15) and a fifth-round choice (No. 170) in 2023. Rodgers ranks No. 1 in NFL history in TD/INT ratio (4.52, 475/105) and interception percentage (1.37) and No. 2 in career passer rating (103.6). He is one of only five players in NFL history to win consecutive Most Valuable Player awards from The Associated Press and ranks No. 2 with four AP MVPs (2011, 2014, 2020, 2021), trailing only Manning (five).

Rodgers also ranks in the top 10 in league history in completions (No. 8 with 5,001), passing yards (No. 9 with 59,055) and 300-yard passing games (No. 6 with 69). With Rodgers as the starting quarterback over the past 15 seasons, Green Bay made the playoffs 11 times, won the division eight times and won a Super Bowl title.

Can Love Make This Team Better?

Jordan Love’s only start in the NFL was Week 9 of the 2021 season when Rodgers had COVID and the Packers lost 13-7 in Kansas City. Love has completed 50 of 83 for 606 yards, three TDs and three picks in his career. The Packers also lost receivers Randall Cobb and Allen Lazard in free agency to the Jets so you can see why oddsmakers are down on this team, although the offense still has an excellent 1-2 punch at running back in Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon.

It might be the least-experienced passing attack in modern league history as a quarterback room with a combined 83 career pass attempts (all by Love) will be throwing to a group almost entirely comprised of rookies and second-year receivers. The most experienced wide receiver or tight end on this depth chart is Josiah Deguara, who will be entering his fourth NFL season.

“I think we’ve got a great team,” Love said. “I think we have a good offense, a young offense. We have a lot of work to keep putting in, keep building together. And I think we have a really good defense. Once we get everybody back and healthy, we’ll be really good. … I think we’ve got playmakers on offense. I think all the weapons we have at receiver, tight end and running back, we’ve got guys who can make plays. … I think once everybody gets rolling, gets comfortable with the offense and being where they need to be every play, the sky’s the limit for us.”

Packers 2023 NFL Draft Results

Green Bay never takes first-round receivers despite a clear need — of the Packers’ last 13 first-round picks, only one (Love) has been an offensive player — and that trend continued this year as the team took Iowa pass-rusher Lukas Van Ness at No. 13 overall. The Packers ranked 27th in the NFL in sacks with 34 last year. Van Ness had 14 sacks and 20.5 tackles for loss combined over his final two seasons. One the Pack’s top defensive linemen, Rashan Gary, might not be ready for Week 1 after tearing his ACL in November last year.

At No. 42 overall, the Pack did get Love some help with tight end Luke Musgrave of Oregon State. After losing Robert Tonyan in free agency and not re-signing Marcedes Lewis, they had only two tight ends with any NFL experience on their roster, Deguara and Tyler Davis, and they combined for just 17 catches for 140 yards and no touchdowns. Musgrave was limited to two games last season because of a knee injury, though he caught 11 passes for 169 yards and a touchdown in those contests.

How Tough is Their Upcoming Season?

Green Bay plays five prime-time games this season, the 10th straight season it will play at least that many. However, for the first time in many years, neither Packers-Bears game is set for prime time. They play Week 1 in Chicago with the Bears as short favorites – which is very rare in this series. It’s the fifth straight year and the ninth time in the last 11 seasons that Green Bay has started the season on the road. Green Bay is the only team in the NFL to open the season on the road each of the last five years (2019-23).
