Early European league exposure

Despite interest from Premier League clubs, Mejbri started out his club career with Athletic Club de Boulogne-Billancourt before joining Ligue 1’s AS Monaco in 2018. Initially a top gun of Monaco’s youth development, Mejbri decided to part ways with the club following breached contract agreements. In 2019, he was under the radar of huge European clubs, including Bundesliga, Ligue 1, and La Liga champions, Bayern Munich, PSG, and Barcelona respectively.

However, after drawing the attention of highly acclaimed teams, Mejbri eventually brought his talent to Premier League side Manchester United. The Tunisian midfielder settled into the club’s youth team, progressing to the under-23 squad at 17 years of age. He quickly rose to the senior team in 2021 and played his first game for the Red Devils in May 2021.

Classic midfield traits in a young talent

The United player is one of the few creative midfielders and mainly features in the No. 10 position for United and is worthy of Nitrobetting’s 2022 FIFA World Cup Player Spotlight: Hannibal Mejbri. Versatility allows him to play anywhere across the midfield three. With his preferred position, he tends to swing in and out of wide and central positions, taking up the half-spaces a classic midfielder is expected to occupy.

His dribbling capabilities allow him to carry the ball forward. We often see him get fouled as a result of his dribbling skills, opening more dead ball opportunities for his side. Moreover, the youngster pulls comparisons with Paul Pogba thanks to his technical skills, wide vision, and midfield versatility. Having a high level of confidence with the ball makes him a worthy successor to the Frenchman.

World Cup debut

He initially started his international soccer career appearing for France at under-16. Mejbri appeared for 15 games for Les Bleus during his youth days. However, having Tunisian parents allowed him to represent his country. Hannibal was called up to the men’s national team for the first time in May 2021, pledging his international future to his parent’s birth. The teenager debuted in a 1-0 victory over DR Congo in June 2021.

We first saw Mejbri compete in a major tournament at the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup, where he started in all five of Tunisia’s matches. After a positive run in the World Cup qualifiers, the 19-year-old made his way to the biggest soccer tournament this year as +1,400 sleepers to win Group D.
