Why Bet on the Miami Heat?
Maybe the Heat are better off in this series without starting point guard and Philadelphia native Kyle Lowry? Miami is now 3-0 without Lowry and 0-2 with him. He missed Game 5 on Tuesday and the Heat dominated 120-85 to stay unbeaten at home since late March.
Max Strus had his best game of the series with 19 points and 10 rebounds with four 3-pointers in 28 minutes. After averaging 14.0 points per game in the first round, Strus struggled mightily in the first four games of this series. He didn’t hit double figures in any of those games. Strus hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter alone, with the 19 points being one shy of his high for these playoffs. It was the first postseason double-double of his NBA career.
For Strus, it was a matter of being more aggressive.
“After those last two games, watching the film, I had to be more aggressive,” Strus said. “I had open looks in Philly, but I just wasn’t shooting them. I think that was the key for me tonight. Just be aggressive and come out firing. Make or miss, it doesn’t matter. Just if I get a look, try to take it and take advantage of what they give me. That was my attitude tonight. Once the first went down, it kind of affected the team. Once you make shots, it opens up everything else for everyone else.”
Starting in place of Lowry again, Gabe Vincent had 15 points, five rebounds and two assists. Vincent was at his best during the regular season when filling in for Lowry, and he came through with his best effort of the series in Game 5. The 15 points were only four less than his total in the first four games combined, and Vincent only scored two points in those losses in Philadelphia. It is not likely that Lowry returns from his hamstring injury on Thursday. A potential Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals could start Sunday or Tuesday. If Lowry is done for this series and the Heat advance, he would get another week of rest.
It’s not a case where the Miami Heat are better without the six-time All-Star point guard. The Heat are just better without him than with him on the court operating on a bad leg. Everyone Miami used to fill in for Lowry in Game 4 — from Vincent, the starter in his absence, to Victor Oladipo, to Jimmy Butler — excelled in their added responsibilities.
Jimmy Butler shot 9-of-15 from and had 23 points, nine rebounds and six assists in Game 4. Butler was efficient from the field en route to a fourth straight game with 20-plus points. He also dished out at least six assists for the third time over the last four games and fell one rebound short of a double-double. Through nine playoff contests, Butler has averaged 28.3 points, 7.4 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 2.2 steals.
Why Bet on the Philadelphia 76ers?
Joel Embiid shot 7-of-12 from the field and 3-of-3 from the foul line for 17 points and five rebounds in 33 minutes in a losing effort. He appeared to be a bit sluggish early on, and then took a shot to the face during the second quarter. While Embiid was able to remain in the game after the ensuing timeout, he was a shell of himself on the floor.
James Harden also struggled with just 14 points in 37 minutes. After having his best game of the series in Philadelphia’s Game 4 win on Sunday, Harden appeared to be poised to take things to another level on Tuesday. Harden has now scored 17 points or fewer in three of the five games of this series.
The 76ers looked listless from the opening tip, and universally agreed that was the case postgame, as Miami jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.
“I think we just weren’t engaged defensively, and that slowed down our offense,” said Harden. “We gotta be engaged. We got to be locked in. In the second round of the playoffs, on the road in a Game 5, it’s not good enough just to play hard. You got to play hard. You got to be able to think, possession by possession, and we just didn’t put enough thinking possessions together.”
If the Sixers lose this game, it could be the end of Doc Rivers’ tenure as coach.
