Why Bet on the Phoenix Suns?

None of these games have been close, at least in regards to the final score, and that continued in Game 5 on Tuesday as the Suns routed the visiting Mavericks 110-80. Devin Booker hit 11-of-20 shots and three 3-pointers for 28 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals in 35 minutes.

Booker has now played in three Game 5s when Phoenix is tied 2-2 and has starred in all three. Last year there was the first round against the Los Angeles Lakers when he had 30 points in 32 minutes and then the NBA Finals versus the Milwaukee Bucks when he recorded his second straight 40-point game.

The Suns were only up three at the half but went on a 17-0 run to start the third quarter and the game was over. Phoenix outscored Dallas 33-14 in the third quarter, holding the Mavericks to just 6-for-16 from the field while forcing 12 turnovers. Dallas looked completely out of sorts on offense. The 12 turnovers were the most a team has committed in a single quarter in the playoffs since 2012. The team finished with 16 turnovers on the night, and shot just 38% from the field.

“It was the defense tonight,” Suns head coach Monty Williams said. “When we get stops like that and are able to get out in transition, it gets us going. It gets the crowd going. And I firmly believe that defense travels. It’s the one thing you can do in any gym.”

Chris Paul struggled again from the field for Phoenix in hitting just 3-for-8 for seven points but did have 10 assists. Deandre Ayton hit 9-of-13 shots for 20 points and two nine rebounds. Mikal Bridges broke out of his shooting slump to finish with 14 points. Jae Crowder fouled out of Game 5 with just three points and might have a shoulder injury – if he can’t play in Game 6, that would be important as Crowder is a good three-point shooter and defender.

Why Bet on the Dallas Mavericks?

While Mavs star Luka Doncic finished the game with 28 points, he struggled yet again to be efficient from beyond the arc, going just 2-for-8 from downtown. He’s now 3-for-18 over the last two games from long range. Jalen Brunson chipped in with 21 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal on 9-of-17 shooting while the rest of the Mavericks struggled.

Entering Game 5, the Mavericks had three guys shooting well over 40 percent from deep in Dorian Finney-Smith, Reggie Bullock and Maxi Kleber. In Game 5, they combined to go just 3-for-12, with Bullock missing all three attempts he took. Bullock suffered an apparent left knee injury in Tuesday’s Game 5 loss and wasn’t able to return to the game, but was listed as available.

It was a game where the Mavs just weren’t themselves in the third quarter. Dallas shot only 38 percent from the field, missed 24 of 32 three-pointers, got outrebounded, 50-38, and finished with just nine assists. It was the third-lowest scoring output of the season for the Mavs, who lost at Denver (106-75) on Oct. 29 and lost at home against the New York Knicks (107-77) on March 9.

In facing their first elimination game of this year’s postseason, the Mavs know they must regroup at home and find a way to get this series back to the valley of the Suns.

“Our mood is basically we’ve got to focus up,” guard Jalen Brunson said. “It’s win or go home now. I think everybody knows that and I think that’s just known. It doesn’t really need to be said.”
