The Colts believe they drafted their quarterback of the future. The Colts called Anthony Richardson’s name with the fourth pick in the first round of this past April’s draft. Richardson may not start at first, but he should see some playing time. Will Richardson, and week 1 starter Gardner Minshew, be enough for the Colts to win more games in 2023 than they did in 2022? Indianapolis Colts 2023 Straight-Up Overview

Gardner Minshew will start the season under center. Although Minshew isn’t one of the top quarterbacks in the league, he does have starter’s experience. Also, Gardner’s experience starting under center came with a solid franchise, the Philadelphia Eagles.

So Minshew knows what it takes to win ball games. Luckily for the Colts, Minshew plays behind a solid offensive line. Right tackle Braden Smith is one of the best in the biz. Left tackle Bernhard Raimman is turning into one of the league’s best.

Guards Quenton Nelson and Ryan Kelly had down seasons after suffering injuries in 2021. If the pair bounce back, the Colts should boast one of the better O-lines in the NFL.

Another positive for Indy is running back Jonathan Taylor. JT remains one of the leagues best running backs. Any offensive line improvement will benefit Taylor more than Minshew.

Perhaps, the most important reason to like the Colts’ offense to be improved this season is because Minshew plays in a system that will lean on the rushing attack. With Taylor rushing the ball, Indy won’t rely on Minshew’s arm as much as Philly had to when Jalen Hurts suffered an injury. Also, Gardner knows his role. So he won’t push the envelope as much as he has in the past.

When it comes to the Colts’ defense, it’s impossible not to see improvement. The Colts’ D allowed 25.1 points per game last season, ranking thirtieth. But Indy allowed just 334 total yards per, which means the offense kept putting the defense in bad positions.

The Colts’ turned the ball over 34 times, ranking dead last in the NFL. So if Minshew, and Richardson if he gets the call to start, are more careful than Matt Ryan, Nick Foles, and Sam Ehlinger were last season, the defense will improve as much as the offense.

Of course, that doesn’t mean Indianapolis wins the AFC South. But it does mean Indy play much better football in 2023. A winning 9-8 season straight up isn’t out of the question.

Indianapolis Colts 2023 Against the Spread Overview

The Colts went 6-11 against the spread last season. This season, oddsmakers will have a much better idea of how the Colts will perform ATS than they did last season.

For sure, Indianapolis will have to step it up, but that’s a possibility. Also, the Titans shouldn’t be good and games versus NFC South opponents like Atlanta and Carolina will be ATS toss-ups.

The over/under total went 7-10 in Indianapolis Colts games in 2022. The over has the chance of at least going 9-8.

Minshew is the best starter the Colts have had since Philip Rivers. If Richardson gets up to speed in a hurry, there could be a couple of more overs than unders. At this point, 9-8 is the prediction.
