Why Bet on the Jacksonville Jaguars?
Finishing with a 9-8 record was enough for the Jacksonville Jaguars to seize the AFC South throne away from their rivals last season. It was also a pleasant surprise for the budding Floridian franchise to stage the third-largest comeback in NFL playoff history when they upset the Chargers in the Wild Card Round, and lost by only a single touchdown to the eventual Super Bowl champs the Chiefs in the Divisional Round.
The promise of former first-overall pick Trevor Lawrence is finally coming to fruition, thanks in large part to the revitalized locker room culture under head coach Doug Pederson. Pederson’s own Super Bowl-winning pedigree turned Lawrence into one of the top QBs last season, with the first-time Pro Bowl selection throwing for over 4,100 yards and 25 touchdowns with just eight interceptions. Lawrence is now given another potent weapon in the passing game in former 1,000-yard receiver Calvin Ridley coming off of a season-long suspension.
A mid-tier defense gives some hesitation that the Jags will significantly improve in the second year under the Pederson-Lawrence pairing. However, their offense will be the focal point of their desired success; a strategy that has worked out for Kansas City already.
Why Bet on the Indianapolis Colts?
When Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay announced that his team’s former Pro Bowl center Jeff Saturday (who had no coaching experience prior) would be taking over the head-coaching duties midseason, Colts fans were right to worry. Indeed, Indianapolis lost seven of its last eight games under Saturday’s guidance.
This called for a hard reboot, with former Philly offensive coordinator Shane Steichen taking the reins as the new Colts head coach. Indy also drafted their future franchise QB with the fourth-overall pick in Florida’s Anthony Richardson, who looked impressive in his preseason starts. The team also decided to hand onto disgruntled running back Jonathan Taylor, but pairing Taylor with a mobile play-caller in Richardson could change the former NFL rushing leader’s tune for the better.
Unfortunately, the once-feared Colts defense saw even more departures during the offseason, with the likes of Stephon Gilmore, Bobby Okereke, and Yannick Ngakoue all finding new homes. It would take a banner maiden campaign from Richardson to take the Colts back to the playoffs, which makes the task of upsetting the visiting Jaguars in Week 1 quite the tall order for the newcomer all the more.
Jaguars vs. Colts Betting Trends
- The Jaguars went 4-5 on the road last regular season (SU/ATS), winning their last three in a row.
- Jacksonville is 5-2 in the last seven games versus the rest of the AFC South (4-3 ATS).
- The totals went over in six of Jacksonville’s nine road games the previous season.
- The Colts have lost five straight home games to date (1-4 ATS).
- Indianapolis is 3-2 in the last five meetings against the Jaguars (1-4 ATS).
- The totals went under in four of the last five games between these two division rivals.
Jaguars vs. Colts Expert Betting Predictions
It’s too early to tell how the Colts will fare with Richardson under center and with a much weaker defensive lineup this season. That being said, we expect the Jaguars to coast to their first win of the season despite being on the road for the season opener. Jags running back Travis Etienne should also have a sound performance on the ground against an Indianapolis run defense that allowed over 124 rushing yards per game last season.
