Jaguars vs. Jets 2022 NFL Week 16 Odds, Preview & Pick

By Hank Blaine

Important game in the AFC Wild-Card race on Thursday night to kick off Week 16 of the NFL regular season as the surging Jacksonville Jaguars visit the New York Jets in what could feature the No. 1 quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft in Trevor Lawrence facing the No. 2 overall pick in Zach Wilson.

Note that weather could be a factor, with a bomb cyclone set to hit a large chunk of the northern USA this weekend. Here’s the forecast for Thursday night: “Rain likely. Potential for heavy rainfall. Low 47F. Winds ESE at 15 to 25 mph. Chance of rain 100%. 1 to 2 inches of rain expected.”

Last season, the Jaguars also visited the Jets in Week 16 and lost 26-21 – although both teams are a lot better this year. The Jets had 20 players on the COVID-19 list and played without coach Robert Saleh. New York’s Zach Wilson set a Jets record for a quarterback with 91 yards rushing, highlighted by a 52-yard score — the longest run by a QB in franchise history. It was the third-longest TD run by a rookie quarterback in NFL history. He was also 14 of 22 for 102 yards passing, including a TD throw to back up offensive lineman Conor McDermott.

Braxton Berrios returned a kickoff 102 yards for a touchdown, and Michael Carter ran for 118 yards on 16 carries for New York. Trevor Lawrence was 26 of 39 for 280 yards for the Jaguars. It was the fourth all-time matchup of rookie quarterbacks taken with the first two picks in the draft. The Jaguars hold the all-time regular-season series advantage, 8-7.

Why Bet on the Jacksonville Jaguars?

Jacksonville suddenly is not just in the Wild-Card race but only a game out of first in the AFC South as the Jags won for the third time in four games Sunday, a 40-34 OT upset of Dallas. Rayshawn Jenkins intercepted Dak Prescott’s tipped pass in overtime and returned it 52 yards for a touchdown to end Jacksonville’s 20-game skid — an NFL record — against teams from the other conference. It marked the seventh-longest game-winning interception return for a touchdown in overtime since 1974 and the longest since Robert Alford on October 11, 2015 (59 yards). It was Jenkins’ second pick of the game, and he also led the team with a career-high 18 tackles, the most tackles in a game by a player with multiple interceptions since 1991.

Lawrence, who has been playing great of late, completed 27 of 42 passes for 318 yards, with four touchdowns and an interception. Lawrence also lost a fumble. Three of his TD passes went to Zay Jones. Travis Etienne ran for 103 yards. Over his past six games, Lawrence has 15 touchdowns (14 passing, one rushing) against one interception with a 111.2 passer rating, the highest passer rating among qualified passers in the NFL since Week 9.

The news wasn’t all good, as left tackle Cam Robinson left with a knee injury, and he’s done for the year with a torn meniscus. The Jaguars’ offensive line has been a strength this season, but Robinson’s absence will hurt their ability to protect Lawrence moving forward. Robinson — the No. 34 overall pick in 2017 — signed a three-year, $52.750 million contract ($33 million guaranteed) with the Jaguars in May after the team used the franchise tag on him in March. Second-year player Walker Little replaced him in the lineup and will start at left tackle.

The Jaguars also are dealing with a hamstring injury to right tackle Jawaan Taylor, but Pederson said Taylor will play against the New York Jets on Thursday night.

Why Bet on the New York Jets?

The Jets played without injured starting QB Mike White on Sunday and lost a third straight, 20-17 at home to Detroit. Greg Zuerlein’s 58-yard field goal to tie in the final minute was wide left.

Wilson returned to a starting role and completed 18-of-35 passes for 317 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Right out of the tunnel to start the second half, Wilson threw an interception on the first drive that led to three points for the Lions. The rest of that half would see him misfire on several throws where receivers looked visibly frustrated.

Wide receiver Garrett Wilson totaled 98 receiving yards in Week 15, his fourth-consecutive game with at least 75 receiving yards, the longest active streak in the league. Wilson leads all rookies with 67 catches and 966 receiving yards this season, both the most ever by a Jets rookie.

As of this writing, it’s not clear if White will be cleared by doctors from his ribs’ injury. Receivers Corey Davis and Denzel Mims are both iffy with concussions. Star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams was out injured and is in question for Thursday. He’s having an All-Pro season with a career-high 11 sacks.
