UFC 285 Main Card Preview
Bo Nickal vs. Jamie Pickett
Jamie Pickett is a quality veteran fighter. Pickett has a good 13-8 record and is 9-2 in TKO and KO wins.
So if Pickett is such a good fighter, why is 3-0 Bo Nickal such a huge favorite? For starters, Jamie is 0-3 in submission victories. But that’s not the only reason to back the super chalk.
Nickal won Dana White’s Contender Series by knocking out an opponent and submitting two others. If this fight goes to the mat, and it will, Nickal will force a tap out.
UFC 285 Pick: Bo Nickal
Mateusz Gamrot vs. Jalin Turner
Not only does underdog Jalin Turner have a decent 13-5 record, but Turner has physical advantages over favorite Mateusz Gamrot. Turner is 5 inches taller.
Jalin also has a 6.5 inches reach advantage. Not only that, but Turner is on a 5-match winning streak. He hasn’t lost since 2019.
Gamrot lost to Beneil Dariush in his last. On paper, this is a step-down for Mateusz. Gamrot usually fights much more high profile opponents. But the odds make the favorite unplayable. The odds and his physical advantages make Turner the pick.
UFC 285 Pick: Justin Tafa
Geoff Neal vs. Shavkat Rakhmanov
Every UFC fan on the planet knows that Geoff Neal is a great MMA fighter. Neal will bring a nice 15-4 record into this.
Geoff doesn’t just have a good record. He has a decent ground game to go along with a strong stand-up attack.
Shavkat Rakhmanov is undefeated, though, which is why Neal is such a big time underdog. The chalk in this is 16-0. Not only is Shavkat undefeated, but no fighter has ever gone the distance with him.
Rakhmanov is 8-0 via submission victories and 8-0 via knockout or technical knockout wins. So although we’d love to back Neal, we can’t.
UFC 285 Pick: Shavkat Rakhmanov
Valentina Schevchenko vs. Alexa Grasso // UFC Flyweight Championship
Physically, these two match up well. Both are 5’5”. Schevchenko has a half an inch reach advantage, but that doesn’t mean much.
So if we base our decision on physical attributes, we could make a case for Grasso. However, if we look at other factors, it’s going to be close to impossible for Alexa to win this fight.
Since a loss in 2017 to Amanda Nunes, Schevchenko has won 9 straight bouts. Not only has Valentina won 9 straight, but all 9 were title fights. The favorite gets the victory.
UFC 285 Pick: Valentina Schevchenko
Jon Jones vs. Cyril Gane // UFC Heavyweight Championship
For the first time since 2020, the man many believe is the greatest fighter in MMA history steps into the Octagon. Bones Jones has a 26-1 record.
But the loss isn’t even real. It happened to Matt Hamill back in 2009 via disqualification. Nobody has beaten Jon Jones.
Cyril Gane is a great fighter, but on Saturday he faces the best of all time. Daniel Cormier couldn’t beat Bones. Nor could Alex Gustafsson, Rashad Evans, Chael Sonen, Vitor Belfort, Lyoto Machida, Quinton Jackson, or Mauricio Rua.
Bones is 35 and hasn’t fought since 2020. But he’s still the greatest in history. So Jones gets the nod.
UFC 285 Pick: Jon Jones -170<
