Kansas State vs. Texas 2023 College Football Week 10 Odds, Preview & Pick

By Hank Blaine

Oklahoma is off to the SEC next season along with Texas, meaning the No. 10 Sooners’ Bedlam matchup against Oklahoma State on Saturday is the last meeting between the bitter rivals for the foreseeable future with OU favored on the NCAAF odds. The loser has an uphill climb to reach the Big 12 title game.

The Longhorns and Wildcats have met 23 times previously, with Texas holding a two-game series edge at 13-10. Texas is currently riding a six-game winning streak against K-State dating back to 2017. It is the longest winning run in the series for either program. UT leads 9-3 at home and has won the past five in Austin. Texas and Kansas State will meet as AP ranked opponents for the first time since 2012.

UT won last season’s game in Manhattan, 34-27, when Bijan Robinson ran for 209 yards on 30 carries and Xavier Worthy scored two touchdowns for the Longhorns.

Saturday’s game will feature a salute the 25th Anniversary of Ricky Williams’ epic Heisman Trophy-winning season. In 1998, Williams produced one of the finest seasons in NCAA history, rushing for 2,124 yards and 27 TDs.

Why Bet on the Kansas State Wildcats?

Kansas State (6-2) extended their win streak to three straight last Saturday after defeating Houston at home, 41-0, and also is tied for first in the Big 12. The Wildcats have scored 41 points in each of the last two games and have scored at least 38 points six times this season. Kansas State leads the Big 12 in scoring defense (15.9 ppg) and ranks second in scoring offense (37.4). K-State running backs DJ Giddens (722) and Treshaun Ward (458) rank sixth and 10th, respectively, in the Big 12 Conference in rushing yards.

Senior Will Howard and freshman Avery Johnson have both directed a K-State offense over the last three weeks that has averaged 40 points and 472 yards per game. Howard has thrown for five touchdowns with no interceptions, while Johnson has five rushing touchdowns and two passing scores.

The Cats are one of six Power 5 teams to rank in the top 15 nationally in both scoring offense and scoring defense. They enter play this week ranked 13th by scoring 37.4 points per game. Since Collin Klein took over as offensive coordinator for the 2021 Texas Bowl, K-State is averaging 34.5 points per game, which includes five games this season of 40 or more points. The K-State defense enters the week ranked in the top 25 nationally in third down defense (6th – 28.9%), scoring defense (14th – 15.9 ppg), pass efficiency defense (16th – 114.14) and rushing defense (23rd – 109.4 yds/gm). The Wildcats have allowed just three points in their past nine quarters.

Why Bet on the Texas Longhorns?

Texas (No. 7) is ranked in the AP Top-10 for the eighth consecutive week, the longest single-season stretch for the Longhorns since 2009. UT (7-1) is tied for the Big 12 lead and off a 35-6 home win over BYU on Saturday. With Quinn Ewers hurt and expected out this week as well, Maalik Murphy made his first career start at quarterback and completed 16-of-25 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns. Jonathan Brooks was the Longhorns’ leading rusher and receiver with 16 carries for 98 yards and one touchdown to go with four catches for 40 yards.

Xavier Worthy gave the Longhorns an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter with his first career punt return for a touchdown. It was Texas’ first punt return for a touchdown since 2018, and the first one allowed by BYU since 2019. The Longhorns’ 7-1 start is the best for the program since 2009.

Texas has scored 30 points or more points in each of the first eight games of the season for the first time in program history. Brooks is averaging 115.4 rushing yards per game, second in the Big 12. Texas ranks third in the nation in third-down defense, allowing opponents to convert on just 27.8 percent of opportunities. Texas ranks 15th among Power 5 programs in total offense (454.1) and 20th in total defense (328.0), one of seven programs to rank among the top-20 in both categories. The Longhorns are one of only eight FBS schools (and six Power 5 programs) scoring at least 34 points (34.5) and allowing 16 or fewer points (16.0) per game.

The status of Ewers (along with edge rusher Ethan Burke and safety Jalen Catalon) remains week-to-week as he continues to deal with a Grade 2 AC joint sprain in his right shoulder.
