Kevin Durant on the Trading Block After Kyrie Irving Deal?

By Hank Blaine

NBA superstar Kevin Durant has spent three-plus years as the top dog of the Brooklyn Nets. However, the Nets struggled to win a championship throughout Durant’s tenure, let alone reach the NBA Finals. With Brooklyn having dismantled the core of their supposed Big Three, KD’s name has now been thrown into the mix of a possible trade before Thursday’s deadline.

Nitrobetting is ready to dish out key assists and lob passes with betting tips and news coverage throughout the 2022-23 NBA season. This time, let’s determine whether or not Nets superstar Kevin Durant will also be traded by the Nets after the team just completed a deal to trade away Kyrie Irving to the Mavericks.

No Sleep for KD in Brooklyn

The Nets were one of the hottest teams in the league right out of the gate this season. However, they’ve gone just 5-9 since January 13 and their campaign is now in jeopardy. They traded star point guard Kyrie Irving to the Mavericks earlier this week and Kevin Durant remains out with a knee injury and will miss the All-Star Game because of this issue.

Durant is the last piece of Brooklyn’s former aspirations of a new Big Three consisting of him, Irving, and James Harden (now with the Sixers). Neither of the three men was healthy enough to stay on the court for extended periods of time and this was the biggest factor as to why the Nets are one of the most disappointing franchises of recent memory.

Nets Insist They’re Not Moving Durant, Though

As dire as the situation is in Brooklyn right now, team management has expressed no interest in dealing their lone prized superstar on the roster before Thursday’s trade deadline. Acquiring Dorian Finney-Smith and a returning Spencer Dinwiddie from the Irving trade with the Mavs means that the Nets will still be competitive, but that still hinges on Durant’s health and motivation to continue playing at a high level after his former All-Star running mates in Irving and Harden have already left town.

Simply put, the Nets would be better off planning their rebuild as early as now, and a disheartened Durant should no longer be in that picture as well. There’s no doubt that KD will net them (no pun intended) a ton of high-pick draft assets from interested parties.

Possible Trade Destinations

Should the Nets decide to pull the trigger on shipping Durant before the trade deadline, there are a couple of interesting trade partners to consider. The most obvious one is Phoenix, as the Suns were in talks of acquiring Durant this past offseason involving a sign-and-trade deal for DeAndre Ayton. The Suns are currently 8.5 games behind the top spot in the Western Conference standings, which is a far cry from their last two massively successful campaigns.

The other likely destination for Durant happens to be Brooklyn’s division rival over in Boston. During the offseason, the Celtics also offered the Nets a trade package for Durant involving Jaylen Brown and a future first-round pick, which the Nets turned down. KD would be thrilled to join an instant playoff contender, but the Celtics already have terrific chemistry and are the current leaders of the East. Then again, if the price is right for Boston, this could end up being of the biggest NBA trade deadline deals of all time.
